surging

i have a 1988 Californian z31 300zx turbo

I seems to be surging at idle when in drive but is ok when in park.

Any ideas on where to start looking to fix this problem?

I had an issue like this with a BMW a while back.

 

 

idle control valve (couldnt get its act together) for when the alternator or a/c was running, cold start vs normal running, "catching" idle after driving etc etc.

 

I cant remember if we fixed it with programming or replacing the idel control valve, but its worth a shot

 

that is if you meant that kind of surging...

yeh it makes sense. It revs are fluctuating in waves. Ill check the idol controll valve out maby see if i can get a second hand one to replace it with
