peter t Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 Hi, Assuming the dissy drive is in the correct place does this look like the leads are in the correct position in the cap. Timing order 153624 Thanks in advance for replies and help. Quote
RB30X Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 The arrow on your radiator hose is going the wrong way? Quote
peter t Posted January 16, 2010 Author Posted January 16, 2010 Funny that Tim but guess what:: the water goes the other way. What has that got to do with my leads anyway? Quote
RB30X Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 are you having spark issues? You didn't really mention why you wanted to know if they were on the right way. Does it fire at all? Is it 180' degrees out? Quote
peter t Posted January 16, 2010 Author Posted January 16, 2010 Haven't fired her up yet. Just making sure I have everything connected right. So can anyone have a look at their dissy and tell me if I have got it right or not. It is very to trace leads in all the pics that are on the site and the service manual doesn't show it only the firing order. Call me dumb but forget to number the leads when I renewed them. How many people have done that. Quote
garvice Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 Car is elsewhere and it has individual coils so my car is no help to you. Easiest way to check is to set the engine at Cyl 1 TDC (Check through spark plug hole for top of piston and through oil cap hole for intake and exhaust lobes pointing up). Then look at which plug your rotor is pointing at, that will be plug 1, then just count around for the rest. Quote
peter t Posted January 16, 2010 Author Posted January 16, 2010 Thanks Garvice will check in the morning. At last a helpfull hint. I knew it would come. Thanks again. Quote
RB30X Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 At last a helpfull hint. I knew it would come. Now that the JD has worn off I've just noticed no. 1 should be where you have no.2. If you look on the dizzy cap near where you have no.2 plugged in it should even say no.1. Move them all around so 1 is there. Quote
Ben Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 Yes, they're miles out... The #1 timing mark is on the cap, and points roughly towards the radiator. From there, in an anti-clockwise direction; 153624 Quote
peter t Posted January 17, 2010 Author Posted January 17, 2010 Waxhead had a look today and it would appear the oil pump has been installed 180 deg out. Will have to fix or just leave as is, Quote
garvice Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 I think by removing the distributor the oil shaft can be removed. If I am wrong, you should just be able to put the leads 180deg out. Quote
peter t Posted January 17, 2010 Author Posted January 17, 2010 The sharft is part of the oil pump which extends up to become the dissy drive. It has a cog mid way. It should be installed so the small side of the dissy drive is at the front at TDC No1. Waxhead said it should be OK but will check with engine builder before I kick her over. Just have to have the leads in a different place to standard in the cap. Not a big Job to fix just might confuse any one doing tune up on the motor. Quote
Ben Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 It will work fine as-is. But I recommend that you drop the pump and set it up correctly. Otherwise it will confuse the sh** out of someone (probably you) when you are wondering why it's not firing when you think it should be. 15 minutes (or 1/2 hour if you have a big front sway-bar and need to unbolt it...) and you'll be done. When installing the intermediate shaft, you can use a clothes-peg on the dizzy drive end to hold it in place while you locate the pump (if you install it as one unit, then this doesn't apply). Quote
peter t Posted January 18, 2010 Author Posted January 18, 2010 Thanks Ben. Just another job to do before getting it on the road. At the moment I am removing the brake lines to get new ones made. Should have done it when I had them off the car and bought a pipe spanner to undo them in the first place. Quote
