Custom wiring harness kits

This probably won't apeal to most of you as your Zed's have a wiring harness. My car was purchased without one, and slowly I have been going through and wiring up everything myself. As I'm looking to put the dash in soon (which still has its harness) I'm thinking of purchasing a heap of wire and terminals etc to re-wire the car. Now I could try to track down the original wiring colours and try to make it the same as the original diagram or build a custom loom according to my own diagram, but a lot of wires would be the same colour etc.

My question is has anyone ever purchased a custom wiring kit to assist the process of re-wiring their car (any car) and probably in the long run make it cheaper after buying all the wires/relays/fuses and clips etc seperatley.

I can't find a link, but there are quite a few companies that make generic wiring harnesses for vehicles.

 

There is one particular company that make a generic harness with a range of circuits available from around 9 up to 15 or so depending on what you need for hot rods and classic cars.

 

The harness comes with all fittings and fuses and makes the job much easier. If your lucky you may find a company that does a Z harness.

Ahh, so that's what those guys do....  Go past them every day.

 

As far as a wiring harness goes, it may well be cheaper to buy one or get an auto elec to copy a standard one than to make it yourself - buying that many different coloured wires is expensive, otherwise I'd have a nice shelf full of the stuff.  I think a brand the Americans often use is called 'Painless', never had a look at their stuff though.

 

The other option which I've used for EFI harnesses before, is to grab some complete secondhand looms out of a car, and start cutting!  Advantage is you get some nice plugs to use, and just need a few new terminals to make it work.

I have contemplated buying the wire/connectors multiple times. What always deters me is being able to buy the wires in affordable lengths. Normally the wire is sold as a 100m roll. Multiply that by several colours and multiple gauges and you soon realise that it will cost a fortune to outlay for the wire. It would be great as you would then be set up to rewire multiple cars down the track, but the initial outlay is daunting.

 

Buying by the meter is also not normally an option as the markup from the auto elecs is ridiculous.

I found these guys. They do custom wiring harnesses and they even have a 370z as the demo car in the pic. 

I like the idea of having an old car wired like a new car with blue tooth and all the mod cons.
