peter t Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 G.day, I have been quoted $2150.00 for a complete L26 bottom to top rebuild. Does this sound like a resonable amount? Doesn't include bolt on stuff like water pump, dissy etc. Just spent $2000.00 on new interior not counting the recon dash. Would post pics but have not got a clue how to do it. Car is off the bbq with all new shocks, rubbers, steering rack, rails and paint underneath. Quote
peter t Posted September 18, 2009 Author Posted September 18, 2009 Thanks, Did a few myself over the years but want this one to last me out. The tax man gave me a good present and i figure why not put it to good use. Quote
260Coupe Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 Sounds too cheap ?......ensure you clarify what constitutes a rebuild ? ie what are you getting for you hard earned $$$ Ensure you get the following at the minimum Block hot tanked and decked if necessary Check cylinder bores and hone or bore out to oversize if required New crank shaft and conrod bearings Linish crank shaft or machine if journals are scored, Balance crank, flywheel and clutch New pistons (these go oval after 250,000 km) get flat top 240z pistons to increase comp to 10:1 New rings All new timing gear, chain guides, tensioners etc Stainless valve seats (so you can run PULP without valve seat recession) New valves if required Head decked to match block Expect around $4-5k for a "decent" refresh Quote
. Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 I agree those things are nice but they are way more than the minimum. eg New crank? If there is nothing wrong with the old crank why change it. Same with the valves. A lot of that stuff is only required if a problem is found. Hence it would be on top of the standard price. I am reasonably sure Peter is only after a normal rebuild not a performance build. $2K is the right price for a normal build. Having said all that, I do agree with the idea of spending a little more if you drive the car hard. but if not, stick with the standard build. I also agree with getting written confirmation of the inclusions for that price. Its a bit like a $999 respray. Nothing wrong with it but when you take the car to them they will find all sorts of add ons that were not identified until they started work. Quote
peter t Posted September 18, 2009 Author Posted September 18, 2009 Quote is from engine rebuilders that have been at the same place for years. Have head work done by them in the past with zero problems. Not going to be hard driven so looks like I will go with them. will post their web site next. Quote

Lynton Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 If you contacted ROBCO engineering or robco@sx.com.au (Rob Crighton) mobile 0413 312 649 he has a 260Z and does a lot of rebuilding and steel fabrication he would at least be able to give you an honest answer of cost. He is located in melbourne southern suburbs no help to you but he will be a wealth of information and help for you. Lynton Quote

I think Alan meant just new crankshaft bearings; not a whole new crankshaft! My engine rebuild with some performance modifications is going to be a shade under $5000. Nothing serious but just a good freshen up. Quote

Thanks Dimitri..........you are around the same $$$ as I spent on my donk for some small performance mods (mad if you don't while you have it stripped down)......the easiest is a high comp engine.......install flat tops and up the comp to 10:1. Stewart Wilkins can source flat top 73 mm pistons BTW Yes correct "new crankshaft bearings" ..........I still do not think you can get a half decent rebuild for $2k.........but I must be wrong. Quote
zedrally Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 If it's of any help, I just spent $3700 on the 260 engine, head, oil seals (all) no leaks after 20years for once. and a shit load of other new parts to numerous to mention. Purrs like a kitten, roars like a Lion when asked. No performance work was done to it. Just need to do the same with the 240 (after the body, that is). Had John Rawson (Tayell Automotive, East Bentleigh) do the job and can highly recomend him. Quote
