Should I have my 280ZX dizzy recurved with a mehanical advance?

I have been quoted $220 to do so

+ $330 for a multi-spark module

+ Higher output coils start from $50.

What have people done and what are your results?

What is the problem with it?

I'm a novice that's waiting for delivery of a reconditioned 280zx ignition system for my 240 on the basis that they never need adjustment and can't be improved upon!

Out of interest how much is the reconditioning of the dizzy? Is it incuding the cost of the dizzy as well?

The reco was actually a little cheaper than a busted old 280ZX dizzy sold for on ebay a bit earlier.  It includes:

1. 280ZX distributor w/ignition module 12-80

2. 280ZX ignition coil

3. wire harness/connectors from dist. to coil

4. coil mount

Old mate that is doing it for me asked not to disclose how much he's doing it for because I assume it has cost at least as much as I'm paying for the bits before he even started the resto.  I would've been happy to part with about double what I'm up for but he's cool and insisted he'd do it for the quoted price.

So far I've got a clock from him that is a gem - jecco and it keeps time perfectly - no adjustment required after over a week! (only it doesn't tick).

His ebay name is azaria and if you contact him he'll let you know what you're up for, turn around time etc but he's been quicker than quoted each time for me.  Oh yeah, had to pay up front too.

I think it is whats restricting my revs, only pulls to 5,500rpm

Would like it to rev more freely to higher rpm's.

C'mon guy's.......where are all the eggspurts ???

At $600 you're 75% of the way to a Megasquirt system where you lock the dizzy and program the curve against both RPM and vacuum.  It requires patience, a lot of reading and some basic skills (none of which the idiot I sold mine to has) but to me it would seem to be better value than recurving the dizzy.

(I'm assuming you are talking about your 280zx and not a carby Z?)

That's a very good point about MS, but its a bit of fear of the unknown.

My 280ZX has triple mikuni's, I figured that it wouldn't be any worse than stock EFI performance with that growl that I have never had and always craved.

...its a bit of fear of the unknown.

That was my biggest hurdle, being game enough to start cutting into a working system.  For me MS ended up being a much easier system to understand and diagnose than the stock system.

From what I remember, the 280zx is fully advanced low down in the rev range, (2500-3000rpm ?)  I wouldn't have jumped at that for what's holding you back at 5500  ???

That was my first thought too, but I was talking to a guy at an NDSOC meeting and he had work done to his dizzy which transformed it, in his words, to "a 7,000rpm monster". Only change being the dizzy, so I figure it can't hurt.

have you dyno'd the car to check the ignition timing and max advance etc ??

My stock 280zx ignition spins my L26 to 7500 with no probs (with the 72 cam)..........maybe get the car dyno'd to see what the ignition is doing under load.

I was going to get the carbies tuned on a dyno to get the jets right.

Might wait on the dizzy until after that gets done.

Have you checked the timing at higher rpm to see if the mark dances around?  A worn dizzy (rather than the advance) might be playing havoc with your timing.  Another thing, is the timing mark on the crank pulley still where it is supposed to be at TDC?  It can slip if the damper is starting to disintegrate, in my case the outer ring completely separated but pauly_adams said his has just slipped.
