The R180 in my 1600 had the half shafts with the input attached via a single centre bolt whereas the R200 in my Z has the four bolt flange type same as the R160. If that makes sense.

hmmm I think that just confuses matters. No offence. The difference you are trying to describe is the securing method. The width etc of the shaft is the same for the R180 or R200 (so long as they are the early types). The number of splines changed on the later units (Z32, WRX etc) so they are not compatible.

For the early types the securing method is the difference. Some just clipped in place while some had a single bolt. Apparently all the bolt does is keep pressure on the oil seal to reduce leaking.

The flange discussion is irrelevant because if you had the flange in the diff it can be removed and replaced with the shaft with the spline built in. (Not that I'm recommending that).

:)  Yes the shafts will fit from a R180 into an R200 so long as the number of splines is the same.

I hear conflicting stories about the length of the shafts though. I had heard that one shaft is shorter for an R200 to allow for the wider diff. But all the shafts I have seen are the same????
