nedloh312 Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 I need to replace my syncro rings but want to know if i can do it myself or do i have to get a mechanic to do it? I have asked 3 mechanics to give me quotes but none have called me back and when i revisited, none knew anything about it.. Didn't inspire confidence in me so i thought maybe i could do it myself? I know i can get the rings from SW Motorsport so it's just a matter of replacing them.... Quote
C.A.R. Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 OK... seeing as you wont listen to me on MSN, it'll be here. I replaced the 2nd & 3rd bulk rings in that box as well as new bearings. You WILL NOT have to replace all of them - only the 1st gear bulk ring. It was in good serviceable condition & I did not see reason to replace it. Obviously your different driving style (to me) nessatates it to be renewed... It's NOT a job for you to do - you need to find someone who's familier with Zed gearbox's to do it. Quote

260Coupe Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 If you have no experience with gearboxes then I would strongly recommend that you go to a gearbox reco business . Replacement of syncros and bearings is straight forward however there are many tolerances that need to be measured and a trained eye to check what other components are worn (the ID of the coupling sleeves, shift fork wear , end play on the main cluster etc) A Zed box is great when rebuilt properly but can be a dog if it is botched up. Expect to pay around $1000 for a decent rebuild. I have a brilliant gearbox builder her in Melbourne who rebuilds Z and Roadster boxes sent from all over Aust....PM me if you need his details Quote

Jospef Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 Old dogs for the hard road and PUPPIES for the pavement.......... He asked for help not criticism. Take it to a specialist and see if he'll let you watch? Could learn a thing or two. Quote
