purplewac Posted April 14, 2018 Posted April 14, 2018 Does anyone know if there are more than one type of distributor fitted to the Australian 260z 2+2 as standard? I am trying to buy a new cap, rotor, condenser and points, but everywhere only has one set of part numbers listed that is for the wrong parts. The replacement cap is too small, the condenser mounts differently and although the points look the same they won't adjust correctly. The part number of the replacement cap is Bosch GH526. I have attached a couple of bad photos of my current distributor. I can't see any part numbers on my distributor or cap etc. Quote
purplewac Posted April 18, 2018 Author Posted April 18, 2018 Update in case anyone else has the same issue. Groundhog kindly offered for me to have a look at his 260z and compare my distributor with his. We found that his original engine had the same larger standard distributor as mine, which appears to be a 280zx type but with points not electronic ignition. This means that a 280zx distributor cap and rotor should fit fine, mine are still on order to confirm. I have since confirmed that the 260z had different distributors for manual and automatic cars, which should account for the difference in size. In the meantime I had a closer look at my distributor, as my car was missing badly over 3000 rpm, and I have just got it back on the road after sixteen years in storage. I noticed a large 10mm gap between the rotor end conductor and the six distributor conductors inside the cap. I am amazed that the car actually ran quite well below 3000rpm as I discovered the previous owner had replaced the distributor rotor with the smaller rotor from the incorrect automatic distributor. I have now installed an old correct rotor temporary and the missing has all gone not surprisingly! GongZ 1 Quote
Groundhog Posted April 19, 2018 Posted April 19, 2018 The difference in distributor betwen manual and automatic is mainly concerned with the flyweights and springs on the advance plate and won't explain the difference in physical size between the early and late model 260's.Good result on the distributor button which I have a spare of also if you need to compare new to old.GH Quote
