apsilon Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 Hi all, After having my 240Z sit around untouched (other things keep coming up) for almost 18 months I decided I'd at least get her registered and drive her as is for a while. So got her going etc and dropped her at a mates workshop for a full going over for anything I missed prior to going for blue slip and to do a full fluid change as it's much easier on a hoist than me doing it all in the driveway. Anyway we couldn't get the diff plug out without butchering it a bit (guess it hasn't been out in a while). I'd like to replace it so does anyone know where to get a new/used plug or what plug from another diff would fit? She's a '73 complied, '72 built 240Z and I assume the diff is the original. Has a much larger plug than any other car I've had if that helps but didn't think to measure it. Thanks. Quote
warrenz Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 Hi The reason the plug may have been difficult to get out is that it is a tapered thread and if you over tighten it then it is very difficult to get out. Same thing happened to me when I first purchased my car, the PO had overtightened it. You could try the usual Z spare parts places like AllZParts or try the wreckers as the R180 diff was fitted to other Datsuns. Warren Quote
apsilon Posted March 14, 2008 Author Posted March 14, 2008 Thanks Warren, PO has several 240Z so I'd hope they'd know not to over tighten it. I'll try the local wreckers over the Easter long weekend if they're open. Didn't realise it was just an R180 (new to Zeds despite having this one sitting in the garage for the last 16 months). Car passed inspection with no issues at all so has a blue slip, picked up the green slip today. Off to the RTA tomorrow morning to register her Quote
silverz Posted March 14, 2008 Posted March 14, 2008 Apsilon, I had the same problem with mine. I had to use this Loctite spray (I can't remeber what it was called) that freezes and penetrates the thread to get the old plug out. I had no trouble getting another one from All Z Parts in Hornsby NSW however. I rang them up on Mon and I had it in Darwin on Wed. I can't remember how much it was but I think it was only $10 or $12. I have bought a number of things from ALL Z Parts and highly recommend them. Regards Peter Quote
apsilon Posted March 14, 2008 Author Posted March 14, 2008 I'm in the Hills District so Hornsby isn't far. I'll have to check them out. Thanks for the tip silverz. Quote
RBZ 260 Posted March 14, 2008 Posted March 14, 2008 nissan spare parts will also have the plug. i had similar issue with my r200 lsd. though my plug was stuffed when i got it all rounded off. so i welded a wheel nut on it and removed it with break bar. BIG PAIN. but got it done. Quote
apsilon Posted March 15, 2008 Author Posted March 15, 2008 Thanks all, I'll sort it out soon. Won't have to take it out again for a while now anyway. BTW I was surprised to find that it's a LSD and not an open diff as I expected. Perhaps it's not a R180? I might grab a pic and get some opinions later. All went to plan this morning so she's now registered and wearing plates. I'll go for a run early tomorrow morning to make sure she's reliable before I sit in peak hour traffic. Quote
