Machining Lash Pad / Valve Spring Retainers For Large Lash Pads

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I am in the final stages of the rebuild on my L28 and I have a set of used 4.8mm lash pads that need to be squared off on the top (in the U section on top).  I would prefer to refurbish these rather than replace them.  I have checked the wipe pattern and if the lash pads were a la little shorter it would still be ok as they 1.5mm from the pivot side.

1) Does any one know someone that can use refurbish these in Melbourne?

2) Or know how to DIY re-finish these lash pads?

3) Worst case supply new ones?

A separate question, with the thick lash pads they really need valve spring retainer that support them so they don't get flicked out, does anyone that can supply these?

Thanks for your help

Theres a bloke down your way, Chris Bullen, I know he manfactures new ones.

Have you tried a wipe test to see how far you need to go?

And do all 12, as you can get different amounts f valve seat recession/embedding heights.

Hi Blue,

If your final selection of lash pad is not thicker than 170 thou (4.25mm) the original spring retainers will be ok. If thicker than 170 thou Stewart Wilkins Motorsport can supply a spring retainer with higher sides. I got mine from him for 190 thou thick lash pads.

Be careful in that, if you use high side spring retainers and they stick up higher than the lash pad when sitting on the valve, the rocker can push the spring retainer down and let the retainers pop out and dropping a valve.

Hi guys,

Feedback has been really useful, I called Chris Bullen today and he is able to help out. I will call SWM on the retainers tomorrow, my shims will be higher than 4.25mm, I have previous thrown a lash pad out and would like not to repeat it.
