engine and gearbox removal

hey all i was wondering how hard it is to remove a engine and gbox and replace it with a a new engine and gbox both L26 and both 5 peed manual. and how would i go about the swap like tips, problems that i may have in the prosses etc

It couldnt really be easier on any other car 

 

Just disconnect the obvious and lift it out. My only tip would be to do it in one piece, as seperating the gearbox from the block under the car is a headache. Also I find it easier to roll the car backward rather than pull the hoist away, so the engine/gearbox doesnt sway, so I make sure there is enough room behind the car.

 

All you need is a hoist, some spanners/sockets and a breaker bar for some of those stubborn nuts like the exhaust.

Rip out the radiator to make sure you have plenty of room.

When you lift it on the angle you need to clear engine bay, be ready for the oil to piss out of your gearbox where the drive shaft used to be.

A good tip is to have a prop shaft output flange (I think thats what you call it. the bit that goes into the rear of the gearbox) removed from another tail shaft to stick it in when you remove your original tail shaft to stop any oil loss..I have one here but I don't think I can get it to you quickly...I have mastered the art of engine removal....out in approx 30 mins! Lots of practice!

hey i ended up sticking whith my original motor it turned out my head was stuffed so i replaced it with a early E88 which has a mild cam new stem seals, shaved 0.7 to 0.8 mm and larger inlet and exaust. now all i haveto do is change my clutch as it has now blown lol i will never end thanks for the replies
