Hi all,

I just have a couple of queries regarding the engineering certification process for a RB25DET 240z in Victoria.

I’ve done some searching of old posts and found some good info but nothing which covers the exact questions I have…..so here goes

I’m relatively new to Melbourne (and Australia) and am looking for some advice from people who have/or are in the process of performing this conversion for a road-registered vehicle. I’m from NZ, and from what I’ve read through of the Vehicle Standards Information (8 – Guide to Modification for Motor Vehicles) available from the Vic roads website, the Approval Certificate system is fairly similar to what I’ve had to do in the past in NZ. My main concern after reading through the document is the reference to the emission regulations. From what I understand the conversion would therefore have to meet the level of the car (R33 GTS-t) from which the engine came from. I would prefer to do away with the factory Skyline airbox, cat converter, engine management, turbo etc….

So my question is - are the original engine’s parts required for an Approval Certificate? My main concern is the ECU, as I don’t want to run the factory engine management.

I did see a post that referred to pre ’76 cars not requiring an emissions test regardless of the engine being used (however all emission control equipment that were on the original engine must be fitted)  - is this correct?

Also, I’ve seen a number of other cars around with ‘Club Permit’ plates – how does this system work? (Is it more relaxed on modifications?). My intentions for the car are for it to be primarily used in the weekends and for circuit/sprint racing (it will not be a daily driver but must be able to driven on the road).

Thanks,

Craig.

The problem at the moment in all the states is there has been a massive crack down on what can and cant be done and the books dont seem to get updated as quick as the rules.

So I recommend finding an engineer and speaking to them, because we can quite easily get it wrong here.  Especially seeing a lot of us live in different dtates.

From my understanding of the club permits, they are a little easier to get modified cars onto the road. However, there is quite a limit to how much you can use the vehicle. Not sure whether it's just on the weekends, or limited to driving to club events. Probably best to check this out with VicRoads sometime, just to double check that it's what you want.

Cheers, and good luck with the project.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm interested in talking to an engineer here in Melbourne to get the latest information. I've downloaded the list of engineers that are able to issue Approval Certificates and was wondering if anyone had experience in dealing with a particular engineer for this line of modification. From my experience in NZ, there were a number of engineers that did not look favourably upon modified japanese cars and made it a bit more difficult that it should of been. I guess many of them had more interest for the hot rod/V8 side of things. This whole process can become quite time/money consuming so I would be interested to hear if anyone can suggest someone good to deal with.

Sanjay Bhide did my initial inspection and was one of the few to be willing to consider an RB25/30 hybrid.

I havent completed my certificate yet, so I cant say I recommend anyone yet, however at least he will give you the time of day at a reasonable price.

On my way in doing the same thing.... any mods to engine  eg: management changes the epa law/ out put of the engine, even bigger turbo throughs it off so no they will not pass it ... club reg is a bit of a joke as long as you tell the boys in blue your on the way to a meet or getting the car repaired then it's ok ... going to the shops is a big no no ... BUT... they are bringing in a 90 day plate which alows you to drive it for 90 days out of the year which is dumb .. how can they police it and its every weekend anyway

My good friends around the corner have put there papers in to get certified .... seen as they have a total of 12 hot rods and muscle cars between them.... the guys i got told to see for this car are the ones in breiside ... dont know them havent spoke to them yet.... but i want to make sure everything is in place before it see's anyone

Hmm, so does that mean my L26-T has no chance at passing? Even if i get it engineered?

I thought as long as it was engineered, plus, passed the emission tests etc. then it would pass..  ???

Thats true, but most people are trying to get engineered without the (very) expensive emissions test.
