bolt7484 Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Guys, Recently bought my 280z but she has a brake problem. The brakes grab BIG time. There is very little feel or pedal movement, it is very challenging to drive. She pulls up straight though. Changed the pads and the rotors are great. Previous owner changed the master cylinder to a 1". Unsure why, had a 7/8" prior.? Suspect the booster. I have double checked the master pushrod length. No change. Maybe the Reaction disc has fallen out in the booster..... Anyone had any experience? It is still inside the booster? Can I get it back without removing the booster from the car?? Quote
dat2kman Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Check that the adjustment rod at top of pedal, going into the booster through firewall, has the correct amount of pedal freeplay, before it actuates booster. If it is too tight, it will engage booster the moment you touch the pedal. With a 1" master it will be a slightly firmer pedal feel. Quote
Scoota G Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 I have booster here. Should i hang onto it just in case you require one? Quote
bolt7484 Posted March 4, 2014 Author Posted March 4, 2014 Scoota, standby.. I might need to replace it but I want to find the problem first. Hope to find some time tonight. Need to locate the reaction disc, I think it has fallen out inside the booster. Reading up on it, sounds like my issue plus the master pushrod has been removed out of the booster, not only by me If no luck I will just replace the whole booster. Quote
pauly_adams Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 mine is very light and ultra touchy, mine pulls up dam fast also ive been driving mine like this for quite some time now and have had no problems. you do get use to it I have changed everything and it is still the same Quote
bolt7484 Posted March 5, 2014 Author Posted March 5, 2014 I disassembled the front of the booster last night via the master push rod. Not that hard really. Ta-da.. the reaction disc was missing!! How pleased can you get about a missing part. lol. After fishing about a bit inside the booster and reading up I decided to leave the old one inside the booster and cut out a new one. 5mm neoprene approx. 26mm diam was my guess. I meticulously calculated the length of the push rod and adjusted it to suit, being ever so careful not to lose my new reaction disc inside the booster. Seems the disc is only held in with a prayer until you assemble the whole thing. And to adjust the push rod length you need to pull out the rod. After getting her all back together and checking the pedal free play I tried out the brakes. I only tried braking in the driveway but there is so much more feel, still only light pressure needed but it is not deadly as before. Will know better once I road test her. Steve Quote
