Hi all,

 

I'm really interested in picking up a 240z/260z however I'm a little concerned about the performance, currently driving an r33 gtst.  I know it's not too difficult to improve performance but I want to be able to do the work myself.

 

A family member tells me that the head from an R31 skyline will fit straight onto the 240z/260z block.  They go on to tell me that the head from my skyline will also fit.  Now these are relatively cheap, I'd love to fit one to a datsun.  Apparently the whole engine can be swapped over and everything is interchangeable.

 

Anyway I am hoping to find out from the knowledgeable people here whether this is true - are the heads for these nissans easily swapable, could I put a r31 3.0L engine into the datsun, etc.  It all sounds a bit too good to be true to me.

 

Can anyone help me here?

lol. Not sure that an engine swap qualifies as a simple engine mod  :D

 

There's quite a few people around who've done the RB swap, so it is possible and you could do the work with the help of a friend.

 

Not sure about the RB30 head fitting onto the L series block.. I wouldn't think it would, but I don't know. lol.

 

Depending on your price range, you might be able to pick up a Z which already has the RB swap done if that's what you're looking for. That would be easy  :P

I guess changing the head isn't a 'simple' mod but I'd be happy to do it because it doesn't require any changes to the running gear, won't need any new engine mounts, etc.  I've done it before on a Fiat - replaced with a Lancia head and got another 30-40hp, a lot better efficiency, and could use unleaded fuel rather than lead-replacement.

 

If another head can't be put onto the standard block then I doubt I would bother - full engine transplants are a major job and can often end up with balance issues.  I guess there are plenty of ways to get more power from an engine.

 

Reading the forums today it appears that at least a 280zx is highly compatible with a 240z.

Have you thought about doing work to the original L series?

 

At a club dyno day recently, a 260Z running triple webers (I'm sure it had other mod's too) got 150kW's at the wheels. That is nothing to sneeze at, that's more than enough power to get you into trouble.

It also sounded HOT.

 

I'd focus on induction, head, cam and exhaust on the L series. Its a good place to start.

Just my thoughts....

I agree on working the L series, a swap to an L28 is simple enough.

 

Besides, there is no way on earth the RB30 head will fit the L series block.

If that was the case, the RB25 head would also fit and we would have a lot of twin cam Z's running around.

an rb 25 head does bolt to a l28 but there are other complications for instace, you would need to change oil and water lines in the rb25 headto suit l28 block, change the head from belt driven to sprocket, then get new computers and get it custom tuned to suit the engine, new exaust ect how do i know this its because i was thinking the same thing it would give a great power increase and mods would be almost never ending

Ok so why you would need the computer ? ASsuming that you can do everything else could you modify the intakes to use a l6 style intake. Then you could use triple webers or a custom ITB solution. If I had the money then it is something i would think about for sure.

I would have thought so too.

 

I'll take some measurements next time I get a chance for interests sake. Cant imagine anything lines up between heads/blocks of different engine families for any manufacturer. Nissan is better than most with commonisation though, so I guess its possible and a I cant prove otherwise at the moment.

it may be slighly wider but the head bolts and ports are the same theres a page on another z forum that has pics ect of a head gasket from a L28 on a rb20 head ill c if i can find it

Just yank the old dam thing out and drop a turbo RB into it its working out cheap for me

some where between 650hp to 700 for 10 grand motor and box ..im more worried its way to much :D  there are a few here that have done it!  Comes down to how capable you are in doing swaps ... or though if i did get mine in better nick with a L series in it i would keep it that way .. stock will hold more value plus its true to its era i jsut brought mine back from the dead ;D
