Natez Posted April 26, 2006 Posted April 26, 2006 Hey, ive never built from scratch a L28 performance motor, ive rebuilt a L26 before, and cost upwards of 1800 with machine work and new pistons, and gasket set etc... but that was years ago... so what are the estimated cost, to build a good streetable N/A L28 F54/N42/or R30 E88 combo say 200-240hp at the flywheel, bored a say 0.060, with headwork (porting), with performance valve spings and valves, flat top pistons, gasket kits, new cam, and any other stuff that needs to be done that im not known about... Thanks Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted April 26, 2006 Administrators Posted April 26, 2006 Hey Nathan, the question is the same as how long is a piece of string really. There are many paths you can take but to get to 250HP will be considerably more in price than 200HP. I reakon you can achieve 200HP with mild port work, a longer duration cam, electronic dizzy extractors and the right combo of top and bottom end. I think you could build such a motor for around $3500. However it depends what you have at your disposal and how resourceful you are. I'd say work out your budget first and then you will know what is realistically achievable. I don't have a set budget with my L31 build and that's probably where I'm running into trouble lol. Quote
Natez Posted April 26, 2006 Author Posted April 26, 2006 well the way im looking at it.... is that id rather build a strong L28 rather than putting a Rb in the car, as i know i will get more power out of a rb, but loose the classic feel of the L6 etc, but i don't want to spend a crap load on a L28 when i finish and be unhappy with the power and be thinking in the back of my head i shoulda went RB, but my budget will be 4k, for the long motor my aim is 200hp/150kw at the wheels, so looking at 240-250hp at the motor.... sco_aus Posted April 26, 2006 Posted April 26, 2006 Just for a comparison for you, I only have an exhaust, intake and front mount and I'm making 155rwkw no worries for the engine. (Cut and shut the intake plenum tomorrow though  ) Quote
thehelix112 Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 I say pick a power goal, not a $ figure, and work from there. Remember everything has to work together, and if you skimp on something you may as well not have done any of it. Building a 250hp L28 is surely a well-known thing. I would be considering: balance rotating mass bigger balancer (chris wood of speed technology for example) arp rod bolts deck head deck block as big a cam as you're comfortable with for intended use appropriate induction (efi/carby, whatever, both will work) head porting: I think you can save some money here by a bit of DIY action, depending on how many L6 heads you can get your hands on, and how patient you are. There are plenty of books that detail porting techniques, and I'm sure you could rig up a DIY flow bench if you so chose. Just a question of time I guess. If you're keen you could get a datrats head port job ($3K) and enough for 350hp @ 25 in.H2O. Dave Quote
