Datsun 240/260/280Z model chart poster
AndrewCarGuy replied to AndrewCarGuy's topic in General Discussions
Thank you, I have made the corrections. The lack of 240 from the ZG's name was picked up from Wikipedia's lack of it, and the Datsun 240ZG error is again from Wikipedia, although their wording sounded a bit like it was a nickname, not an official model. The words I chose I guess could have seemed like it was a model available from Datsun, but that was not the intention. I had no idea about the other Nissan Fairlady 240Z cars. I had to Google deep down into the search results to find something concrete to cross-reference. I ended up finding an article about the Japanese performance models and someone writing in the comments telling off the writer about the same thing you told me off about! I've revised the text to briefly discuss that the L24 engine was introduced in 1971 with the other models and that the ZG was a part of them. I've removed that whole US nose cone thing. -

I've worked really hard to get this poster to where it is at the moment, so I'd love to know what mistakes you're referring to! I offered laminating before but not anymore. I did it through OfficeWorks but they ruined a print on two occasions. So now I leave it up to the customer to do it on their end. It is intended that they are framed behind glass anyway. -

Hi mate, it's available on eBay or my own website: http://www.uniquecarposters.com/datsun-240z-and-nissan-fairlady-z-car-model-chart-poster http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/121347703967?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649 I've now sold three in a week - that's considered a very strong result for one of my posters. -

Thanks mate, I took your advice and changed them to hypens instead of brackets. Does look heaps better. It's all finalised and I've sold two prints so far, so looks like an enthusiastic initial response to this new poster. A BIG thank you to everyone who has helped me out with info, tips, photos and details! -

I have updated the poster with all the points raised, and it is shown below. I'd like to respond to each point individually so you can see how much I appreciate and take care in what you are saying! > HS30-H said: > Japanese market cars did not have the marker lights on the rear quarters. A: I didn't notice, my mistake! Thank you. > The exhausts on the works rally cars are wrong. A: I've found some better side/rear shots to get them right. > Japanese market cars are all Nissans ( not Datsuns ). A: I had no idea, thanks for pointing that out! It has required a revision to the big poster title and individual car labels as well. > Nissan Fairlady Z432 didn't come with a rear spoiler as stock equipment ( although it was an extra-cost option ) but Nissan Fairlady Z432-R did. A: I've taken your advice seriously agree that it'd be best to depict it in standard form, since you made a point about this kind of artwork being referred to many years or even decades from now. I will mention the spoiler being optional in the notes, and that will explain why most of them have one. > What's with the door mirror on the Fairlady Z432-R and Fairlady 240ZG? A: A simple oversight, I forgot to delete the door mirror. > Nissan Fairlady Z432-R came with steel wheels ( and no hubcaps ) as stock equipment. A: I have managed to find a photo with the original wheels (took a while!) and have updated it. Thank you for letting me know. > The police car is a Nissan Fairlady 240ZG, as is the Nissan Fairlady 240ZG ( what's a "Fairlazy"? ). A: I've added individual Datsun or Nissan labels to each car to cater for this and Fairlazy was simply a typo of course. > Brock Racing Enterprises = BRE not 'BRA'. A: Another silly typo. > 'Big Sam' is depicted in Goodwood Festival of Speed guise ( with '240' FoS start number and 240 door numbers ) which is perhaps a little 'late'? The car has been returned to a closer approximation of one of its original liveries now. A: I haven't got around to addressing this yet. Would this be an original livery? http://images1.bonhams.com/image?src=Images/live/2011-05/18/8317775-1-11.jpg&width=640&height=480&halign=l0&valign=t0&autosizefit=0 > Alfadog said: > - Green colour of the first car doesn't quite look right for 907 Racing Green available in 1970 A: Thanks, I think it was meant to be another colour entirely, but I've updated it to that colour. > - Should the steering wheel silhouette look slightly different for RHD/LHD cars? A: No, the original photo I based everything on was shot from a long way away, making things like that look the same from both sides. I always try to find photos like this for my artwork. > - Silhouettes of the seats in the Z432 and Z432-R should be different, i.e can't see them at all really since they are small bucket seats. I'm not sure about the BRE or rally cars. A: Thanks, I have addressed the seats in those models. > - Some of them seem to have 2 interior door locks? A: It's actually the same effect as the steering wheel. The original photo has this too. It is such a perfect angle that the perception makes them look like they are right next to each other. > - Some of the rear qtr badges are in the wrong spot (e.g. Z432) A: Yes, I pasted them in from another car and then must have got distracted or something, and forgot to move them into place! > - Japanese black fender mirrors look kinda too big and bulky A: True, I have examined better photos and revised them. > - Why is there a 1974 260Z and a 1974.5 240Z? A: A simple typo which has been fixed. > - I think the dual exhaust of the Z432 & Z432-R is not high enough, and doesn't look like two pipes A: Thank you, I have revised them accordingly by finding better source photos. > - Front spoiler on the UK car doesn't look right to me A: Thank you again, I really struggled to find a good side shot showing this originally. I managed to find one after you reported this and fixed it all up! > - A subtle detail but if you look at some photos you will notice that the body hip-line crease doesn't continue in front of the front wheel arch A: I noticed that too and had intended to correct it in a final stage. I have done this now. > - Windscreen wipers on the 240Z-G were black A: Thanks, I have changed them! > - Shape of the overfenders on the 240Z-G cars, and the rivet positioning and size doesn't look right A: Thank you, I assumed they'd be the same as the earlier (and now dropped) modified 240Z I was going to include on it, but it turns out they aren't! -

Gosh, thank you for all the details! A lot of stuff I've only been able to base on photos and isn't covered in lists like you have provided. Spelling errors, etc, they would be fixed up in final drafts after proofreading everything. I quickly made that layout last night to get an update to everyone. I will go through everything you have both listed and post another update. So about the Big Sam, you're saying that the 240 number (among other things) is not correct for the year stated? About spoilers, etc, I think it's fine to include factory and dealer optional parts, as that's how some would have left the official showrooms. I can cover that kind of note in the text. Thanks again, so very helpful! -

Hi everyone, work has been keeping me so busy the past couple of weeks. Picked up some new clients (two of them driving schools!) and had a rush on my other posters as eBay increased their Final Value Fee by including the postage amount in the total sale amount on 6 May. I let all my buyers know a couple of weeks beforehand that I would be raising my prices to compensate, so people made good use of the lower prices while they were there. The most difficult part of it was making all the poster tubes, as I make my own using recycled cardboard boxes from Bunnings, to keep it cheaper for my buyers! I also managed to publish a limited run book about the Chrysler Valiant in Australia, which required me to work up to midnight for almost a week to get it ready for the deadline, and a Ferrari club bought a large number of my 308/328 series poster. Anyway....... here is the Datsun S30 poster almost finished! I just need to finalise all the text that will go at the top and under each car. Right now the text shown is from another poster just as a placeholder. I wanted to share its progress again. Thanks to everyone who has helped work out all the little niggles on different market cars. I started to doubt my confidence and almost gave up on this because of all the little changes to the indicators and mirrors, etc, but persevered. This has proven to be possibly the most challenging poster I've made so far, although my Volvo Amazon poster was also reeeeeeally difficult, and I only ended up ever selling three - to one person! If you ever look up the technical info about that car, you'll see what I mean. All the name changing, body code confusion, years changing across different sources... argh! So here it is........ Andrew. -

Did early UK market models have the front indicators mounted in pods below the bumper, mounted off the bumper itself? That's how it was in the image you nominated in an earlier post, and Google Images has thrown up a couple more like that. -

Hi everyone, again my work and new baby have been keeping me busy but I've found time to work on this poster some more over the latter part of the week. Thanks to everyone who has made more suggestions and helped out with info to form the models that will be shown on it. I've decided to include a UK model, as the Aussie model seems to be a standard car just without the side markers? Did it have less restrictions under the bonnet though? Australia will be mentioned in the text of course. I considered putting a 240-based Ferrari replica on it early on, but decided against it. It'd be too much work to make a whole new body shape. I'm dropping Z-BAIT from it too, as the existing cars have already taken so much time to do. I love the story of Big Sam, so will be putting that on it. In total, that makes 4 motorsport cars. Gilltech, I'd love to have these posters printed bigger than A2, but the costs involved are way out of my league. I simply don't sell enough of each individual poster (I've made about 115 different makes/model charts now) to outlay the costs to cover the high minimums required to get them professionally printed like that. Here's some more of the unfinished illustrations below. It shows: a BRE car, Big Sam, a rally car, a police car, the Scarab and a modified 240 from cardomain which was made for the original poster but is no longer part of the plan. -

Hi everyone, been raining here in Melbourne for the past several days, but I feel for the folks up north getting hit by a cyclone! I planted some broccoli and carrots on Sunday and they have already sprouted. Work and a newborn have been keeping me quite busy lately so I haven't had much time to work on this poster but it is getting some attention in my spare time. Thank you to everyone who has made suggestions and comments/feedback on my proposal. Please understand that I am still learning about the whole early Z car world, so I don't mean to annoy anyone or entire countries by leaving out certain cars. I've decided to "upgrade" this poster to a 20-car poster format to include more cars on it. I've done this before with my Ford XA/XB/XC model chart and my Holden HK/HT/HG/HQ/HJ/HX/HZ Monaro model chart, and still have room for a large blurb of introductory text and labels, years and text for each specific car. I also have a Ford Falcon GT/FPV GT model chart with 24 cars on it, but that only has a few specs under each car as there is less room. So 20 is the most I am going to go for this poster, and so each car can have a write-up as well. HS30-H, your comments certainly made me think about the planned line-up, and I have now massaged it into the following (the order will be perfected in time). Note that some cars may not be the year they debuted, in this case it's simply to show a spread of different years. The text under the cars mention the year they arrived. And, like all my model charts, each new year depicted on the poster discusses changes made for that year. 01. 1969 North American 240Z 02. 1969 Fairlady Z432 03. 1970 BRE #46 04. 1970 Fairlady Z432R 05. 1971 East Africa Rally #11 06. 1971 Japanese police 07. 1971 Fairlady ZG 08. 1972 North American 240Z with dealer accessories 09. 1972 Monte Carlo Rally #5 10. 1973 North American 240Z with T-top and maybe another accessory 11. 1973 East Africa Rally #1 12. 1974 North American 260Z 13. 1974 Scarab 14. 1974.5 North American 260Z 15. 1974.5 North American 260Z 2/2 16. 1975 North American 280Z 17. 1977 North American 280Z 18. 1977 Zap 19. 1978 Black Pearl 20. 1972 Z-BAIT re-painted red I am thinking of replacing position 17 with a car from another market country (eg. Australia, New Zealand, Canada, etc) since the Zap shows what a 1977 North American model looks like with the later bumpers. I might also mention that I sell these as 19x13" matte prints normally, but if I can arrange about 40 sales to "launch it" then I can outlay the cost of getting them professionally printed in thicker, larger and glossy A2 size, and they will be cheaper then my own printed versions. So something to think about when this is ready to be offered as a poster. -

Thanks to everyone who has responded overnight! I got a bit excited by that police car, sorry for the confusion with it being on the US list. I have decided I will do a blend of US and Japanese market models on the one print, with no motorsport cars except for the pace car. Though I may replace that with an Aussie model, but am unable to find any definitive info on AU models. Thanks for that big list of cars, it's very helpful. As there's too many for a poster, I have revised it to the following 16: 1969 USDM early model 1970 JDM Z 1970 JDM Z432R 1970 JDM ZG 1971 USDM update 1972 USDM dealer options 1972 JDM ZG police car 1974 260Z 1974 260Z 2/2 1974 Scarab 1974 OMS pace car 1974.5 260Z - new bumpers 1975 280Z 1977 Zap 1978 Black Pearl Z-BAIT Gav, the 260Z has been included since day one. The images I showed are just works in progress on a few of them from the entire range I'm putting on the poster. Phillay, sorry but my policy is to not share "clean" digital copies of my work. People use them to print their own smaller prints from it so I don't share them anymore. -

Thanks for the suggestion of the police version, I definitely want to add that. Well I'm looking for a list of 16 cars to fit the poster format, and at the moment I'm at 16 just for the US models. I think what I'll do is make two posters like I have with my AMC AMX posters, and the buyer can choose which one. I will have one without the Japanese variants and one with them, which drops some non-standard US ones. 01. 1970 02. 1971 with G-nose, rear spoiler and wheel flares 03. 1972 with dealer options 04. 1972 Z-BAIT 05. 1973 with T-top 06. 1973 convertible conversion 07. 1974 260Z 08. 1974 Scarab 09. 1974 OMS pace car 10. 1974.5 260Z (bumpers and full power) 11. 1974.5 260Z 2/2 12. 1975 280Z 13. 1977 280Z 14. 1977 280Z Zap 15. 1978 280Z Black Pearl 16. Modern customised version 17. 1969 police car -

Ahh right, so it's like a deeper front end with no grille a big lower air intake. Enclosed headlights too! I think US regulations banned enclosed headlights though. -

Thanks for the replies! I am doing the US market cars at first, and would definitely want to include dealer-fitted items and some common aftermarket items too, to keep the poster interesting. It will have the Scarab, a convertible conversion and Z-BAIT on it, too. As for items to add onto the cars, I've just found the following: Competition hood scoop G nose - what's that? OEM front and rear spoilers BRE front spook BRE 4-spoke racing wheel Were the BRE items common accessories people added? -
Hi everyone, my name is Andrew and I'm from Melbourne (Australia). I've just introduced myself in the appropriate forum and now I'm writing to seek a little assistance from Datsun fans who may know how to answer a few questions. I am developing a Datsun 240/260/280Z model chart poster which profiles all the key models and changes from the 1969 to 1978 production run, as well as including a few specials. You may have seen some similar posters on eBay. I will post some examples of the posters I make below, but I am close to finishing my Datsun one, and will show some "work in progress" images below as well. I like to show models with different factory accessories fitted on the different cars but I'm finding it hard to locate and confirm what they were exactly. There's little info on the web about it, and the brochures don't really discuss much. I found one for 1972 I think, but no other years. I've managed to find info on a wing-type spoiler, body stripe and rare T-top option, but nothing about the more common ducktail-type spoiler and I'm unsure which front spoilers/air dam are considered period accessories. Was the ducktail spoiler a factory option right from the start? I'm also not sure about optional wheels. What types of wheels could be optioned? Was a radio/stereo usually always fitted? Were bumper overriders/underriders always optional on the original bumper-style cars? Did the optional body stripes change over the years? So I'm looking to option up a few of the models so they don't all look so similar (except in different colours of course) and make it better value for buyers of the poster. Could anyone please make a list of exterior options and what they were called, which years available, etc? I will happily supply the posters to you at a special price! Many thanks in advance and hope someone can help! Andrew.

As per good forum etiquette, I wish to introduce myself to other members. My name is Andrew, I'm 36 and I don't have a Datsun but I love the original 240/260/280Z models. I love cars from all around the world but love the way the Japanese created these stylish value-packed cars which shook up big long-held establishments like the US car industry which had been set in its ways making big cars that chewed through cheap petrol, and then got caught out in a big way when petrol suddenly became a lot more important! I'm here because I specialise in making certain types of car posters which I will discuss shortly in one of the main forums. I have sold many of these posters and have made them for many makes and models, especially a lot of Aussie models from Ford, Holden and Chrysler (and Leyland!). Now I'm making a Datsun 240/260/280Z one and am a bit stuck and need some information to make it the best it can be. So please look out for my next post! Andrew.
