  1. Model: 1979 Datsun 280zx Hardtop, 1982 Datsun 280zx Targa. Location: Brisbane, QLD. Price: AU $3000, all offers considered. Item Condition: Good. Shipping: Local pickup only. Contact Details: Chris - 0421 830 168. http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/collingwood-park/cars-vans-utes/2-datsun-280zx-coupes-1979-1982-swap-for-4x4/1042499895 Hi all, Unfortunately I am at the stage of selling my two 280zx Nissan/Datsuns. My dad and I have been working on them for the past 3/4 of a year, but it has come to a point where they need to be sold. 1979: Bought as a complete car (auto yellow hardtop) with a very good engine (L28E non turbo) and wire spoke wheels (nice and tight but slight surface rust). Black interior, mostly in good condition except the rear seats are split, the dash has cracks and the passenger side carpet is in pieces. Was initially going to restore this car only, but as it was pulled apart there was more rust than we initially thought there would be - mostly around the windshield, a little in the engine bay and around the rear windows. Vehicle History: After being bought new, was given to the son after original owner was too old to drive. He then passed it on to his brother, who put it in a shed for 12 years. Was then sold to the man I bought it from, who flushed the fuel system, cleaned injectors, new spark plugs and a few water and fuel lines. Clock shows 53000kms, unsure if true but wouldn't be surprised. 1982: Bought as a rolling shell (complete minus engine hood and gauges - white targa) with the intent of using this as the body due to rust problems in the hard top. As it turns out there were rust problems in this as well, which my dad and I have been working on for just over half a year - again around the windshield, engine bay and floor, and a little in the roof at the top left corner of the windshield. Around the windshield has been rust converted and sprayed with cold galv, the roof at the top corner of the windshield has been cut out and replaced with new metal, and the rust in the floor has been cut out and some zinc coated steel (1.2mm) worked to the shape of the holes (ready to weld in). The car is currently a rolling shell, with most parts removed. Red interior, good condition except for a hole in the rear seat, cracks in dash and centre console missing. Vehicle history: Unknown, until - was going to be used as a track car; someone tried to put a ford V8 in it, but couldn't close the hood after finishing the swap - hood was then slightly damaged and wouldn't close properly. Hood flew off when it was towed backwards (why they didn't consider that I have no idea), and bought by another person intending to make it a track car, before being bought by me. Have bought separately a manual transmission, heavy duty clutch, clutch master cylinder etc. which I was going to install when doing the engine swap into the targa. Ideal for someone looking to restore an old z car, half the work has already been done. Just finish the rust repairs, do the engine swap and bolt it all back together. Not interested in selling for parts, have already had one person enquire about the manual transmission. Want the whole lot gone.
  2. Thanks all for the opinions, much valued!! I was considering keeping the hard top after finishing the t-top and restoring it with an rb25, as I'm mainly harvesting the engine from it. (Sorry luvemfast, will be keeping the parts from the interior as well, for now at least) The main reason for choosing the t-top instead of the hardtop is the time it would take to fix up, as it would be handy to have a usable car regardless of its cornering ability. In terms of the rb25 it sounds like the hardtop is definitely a better choice considering the power increase. We'll see what my attachment to the targa is after I've used it for a while hah, and I may decide I like the stock engine anyway.
  3. Hi all, Figured I would introduce myself and my project considering I will undoubtedly at some stage be seeking advice on this forum. I'm Chris, and I've taken on a project of fixing up a 280zx shell (white 1982 targa 2+2), and then transferring the engine and extras from a donor car (yellow 1979 2+2), along with a manual transmission conversion - 3 speed auto, no thanks. (This is with the help of my Dad, I'm 19 and not nearly experienced enough to do this efficiently by myself) Was going to do the entire project with the 79 zx but there is much less bodywork to be done on the 82 shell, and it's a targa top so just better. I will probably post a build thread once I've got further into the project, with studies things are going fairly slowly at the moment. Chris.
