    260z misfire woes

Gav - I think you need to have a look at the car - you're the guru!
  3. Hi Zed - missed your post! We're flying into Perth first, doing the touristy thing on West and East Coast and then hopefully settling down in the Melbourne area. Never been there so no idea where we'll wanna live!
  4. Hi Gav, Thanks for that man. Your 240Z is infinitely better than my Z. She's a bit rough at the moment Here's a photo from the ferry when I brought it home: It shares workshop space with my two other cars: & Gav, I'll definitely take you up on that offer mate - it's always good to have a fresh pair of eyes, as I'm getting very very frustrated!
  5. Thanks! So it's probably knackered, or could some other part of the system be faulty?!
  6. Hi Gav, It's a reddy/orange 260Z 2+2. Sitting outside has done it no favours, so it's probably no where near as nice as a Z should be, but it's being prepped for a respray as soon as I get it running properly. That's a very generous offer and one I will most likely take you up on! I'm going to the UK for a week tomorrow, but when I get back I may be picking your brains (see my threads in engine and electrical) What colour is your Z? I've only ever seen another one on the road, and that was a green 260z! Thanks for the welcomes guys! Mark

    260z misfire woes

Hi Pete, Thanks for the reply. I forgot to mention that I also checked coolant level and it did not move during 30 mile misfiring drive from my house to workshop! I will check tappet clearances and replace the leads as the next port of call!

    260z misfire woes

Hi Scoota, Thanks for the quick reply. It's running 240Z SU carbs, retrofitted by previous owner. I'm going to be honest and say I have no idea what distributor it has! It is definitely getting fuel, I have checked fuel filter, and took out the fuel pump to clean and check it - seemed fine. I put 25 litres of fresh fuel in it last week (it was very low). The only thing that's a bit strange is that I was told that the 260Z had 2 fuel pumps - one mechanical at the engine and one electrical at the fuel tank - is that correct? I only have the mechanical fuel pump! I'll see if I can dig up some photos (car is in my workshop 30 miles away).

    260z misfire woes

Hi guys, I have a UK spec 1978 260z 2+2. A friend of mine took the car out one day and called me after parking it up for an hour saying he couldn't get it started as the battery had drained. We jump started the car but it was misfiring and barely running. I drove it home where it languished while life, work and other cars got in the way. Recently, I got some enthusiasm to get the car back up and running. I've done the following with some significant improvement, but it's still misfiring: New condenser New spark plugs New coil & ballast resistor New points (in bad need of replacement) Set timing Checked Valves move up and down as they should All HT leads are sending a spark to the plugs (although they don't look the freshest) Dizzy cap looks fine and is clean inside Rotor arm was a little bit burnt but I cleaned it up with some fine sand paper I know I need to do a compression test (which I will be doing as soon as my compression tester gets here) but is there anything else I should check for? Are there any other common problems? I really want to get it back up and running so all help greatly appreciated! Mark
  10. Hi guys, When I bought my 78 260Z 2+2, the owner had a battery cut off switch fitted as the battery used to drain. I finally got a chance to investigate it and it looks like the voltage regulator is draining 0.7A from the battery. I have opened it up and had a look and it seems that as soon as the battery is connected, it's making a contact on the points. I've tried adjusting it as per the Haynes manual with no change. Is there anything else I can try or should I just replace it? Thanks, Mark
  11. Hey guys, New member here from Ireland. I've owned a 78 260Z since last Christmas which is currently broken, hence me finding your forum! I'm flying over to Australia to live/work in November and looking forward to it - wasn't expecting such a big Z movement! Mark
