SMR 256N CHASSIS NO. HS30-012065 ENGINE NO. L24 109620 Footnotes Among UK Datsun enthusiasts, particularly those with a fondness for the six-cylinder ‘Z’ series, there is no bigger name than that of Spike Anderson, legendary proprietor of Samuri Conversions and the man responsible for a succession of Z-based racers in the 1970s, most notably Win Percy’s famous ‘Big Sam’. This right-hand drive 240Z was bought new in Cyprus by a serving British Army captain while on a tour of duty - it still has a bullet hole in the rear deck from being ambushed by insurgents - and was later privately imported into the UK upon his return. The car was sold to Modsports racer Eddie Stephens who took it to Spike Anderson, founder and proprietor of Samuri Conversions (the idiosyncratic spelling is correct) for conversion to ‘fast road’ Samuri specification circa the end of 1974. Subsequently, the car was put into storage for several years before being bought by James Morris, author of the Haynes Super Profile book, Datsun 240Z/260Z/280Z. A full restoration and upgrade was carried out during 1997/98 by the owner in collaboration with rally-driver and ‘Z’ specialist, Kevin Bristow. The project was guided and supervised by Spike Anderson himself to ensure totally correct road/race Super Samuri period specification and when completed the car featured in Classic & Sports Car magazine (November 1998 issue). A full listing of ‘SMR 256N’s specification (too lengthy to reproduce here) is available for inspection, highlights of which include an engine over-bore to 86mm for a capacity of 2565cc. In addition to the four 9”x15” Minilite magnesium wheels (shod with road tyres) currently on the car, another of the same type plus two 10”x15” magnesium (ex ‘Big Sam’ racer) and two 8”x15” Minilite aluminium wheels (all shod with slicks) come with it. Externally, ‘SMR 265N’ certainly looks the part, boasting re-sculptured bodywork and rare works glassed headlight covers, the entire ensemble being finished in the correct Super Samuri livery (Datsun 110 ‘Flame’ and Chrysler ‘Tango’ metallic). Period Corbeau bucket seats are fitted inside together with full-harness safety belts; bolt-in roll cage (ex ‘Big Sam’ racer); rare works rally clock/stopwatch; Motolita leather steering wheel and alarm/immobiliser. A mere 4,617 miles have been covered since completion and this unique car is offered with MoT to July 2007, current (tax-exempt) road fund licence and Swansea V5 registration document.
