dat240z Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 Hi, just seeking any advice regarding my extremetly loud lifter pump for the surge tank. I did a rb25det conversion and without a baffled tank used a carter black lifter pump to feel the surge. Its super loud.... like having a bird sized bee in your helmet. Some say its cool, and it gives it a racey feel, but it is getting a little annoying. what should i do? search/make a baffled tank. would a efi 280zx tank fit and be suitable? or an alternative pump maybe? ive installed the rubber isolator (mount tab) and done as much as possible to quiet things down (bitumen tar sound deadener inside/under car/ dynamat all inside). im yet to do carpet but i cant imagine it doing much more... Im thinking a suitable baffled tanks the best option and elimintae the surge/lifter??? Quote
Scando Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 I think it's pretty common with lift pumps. I run a Holley blue which is also very noisy so don't change it for one of them Quote
dat240z Posted May 23, 2012 Author Posted May 23, 2012 Thanks Scando, Yeah, I also have a bosch 044 which some people say should be the same noise as the carter. cant even hear the 044 over the carter.... Quote
dat240z Posted May 24, 2012 Author Posted May 24, 2012 Its mounted up near the rear wheel arch, closer in though. Ill try post some pics. If you imagine inside the cabin just behind the driver toolbox (toward arse of car) its mounted to the underneath there. Quote
RB30X Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 I cant even hear the 044 over the carter.... I've got that same set up. ....... and the same noise. I take it you've tried soft mounting it to the bracket to reduce the vibration from the pump transferring through the body? Quote
zed240au Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 After running carter pump and then a holley blue on my car with old v8 i was never going back to that noise My solution was to fit hi pressure internal walboro pump in the tank. It was bit of work cutting access hole into tank welding in a swirl pot and fitting pump but i love the result no pump noise mick Quote
neRok Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 Maybe you could try mount it outside the car, and lower down, that way the fuel would gravity feed into the pump, reduce its load and maybe its noise. Let me know if you want to sell it for a bargain price, I need a good lift pump for an upcoming v8 conversion on my 4wd Quote
dat240z Posted May 25, 2012 Author Posted May 25, 2012 Yeah its mounted outside using the rubber isolater. I think zed240au's way is the ideal one for me. Just dont like the idea if something goes wrong, its a messy fix(inside tank etc). but its definately a better alternative to the super bee noise atm. Quote
Zeddophile Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 I'm running a Goss GE003 on my Alfa, and have fitted them to a couple of other cars - I very rarely hear it at all, but it IS rubber mounted underneath the car, under where the back seat would be if I had it in! Quote
zed240au Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 My method was to have 240z fuel tank steam cleaned then I bought fuel tank out of a daewoo had that steam cleaned too Cut the fuel pump mounting plate out of the daewoo tank .Cut a hole in top of zed tank to suit the daewoo mount fitted a swirl pot into bottom of the zed tank Welded mounting plate out of daewoo tank into top of zed tank .Removed the std daewoo pump and changed length of daewoo mount to suit the depth of zed tank ,fitted walboro pump (to suit ls1or wrx) to the daewoo mount and wired it up Then tank back to the radiator guy to check for leaks he soldered a few small leaks Bolted pump in adjusted fuel gauge sender so it clears the new fuel pump set up put tank back in car and alls good pump sounds just like any late model efi car Pretty sure u could use any efi type tank for the mount the daewoo just had the most suitable look when i went to local wrecker Your right it is bit of pain to change a fuel pump should it ever die but it pretty much the same for any current efi car u have to drop tank to change a pump unless the manufacturer was nice enough to have fitted a cover above tank in car to aid pump removal there are some other ideas on this link http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,9349.msg90765.html#msg90765 mick Quote
