I think some solenoids are a sealed unit. I took one apart but can't remember what car it was off. Theres not much in there anyway; just the big contacts and a coil of wire. Whats your starter doing?

I think I need to replce the contacts, it doesnot have enough emff to engauge the starter moter properly, the battery seems to be in good nick and I have tried with a spare just in case, but still no luck, however if jumped from another car it goes just fine.

How good are both of those batteries? Checked for good connections? You say when you jump start it goes...could be a dodgy battery connection? Clean them all up and make sure they are all schmick! Get a multimeter and check while the engine is cranking. If it goes below 11 volts, replace your battery and/or check your starter's current draw.
