ozy Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 My last trip to the garage was supposed to involve applying a clear film over the car to protect from stone chips etc. as usual, my reliable man didnt get around to it. now, from what ive read, this film is computer cut so it will apply exactly to the vehicle in question, is there any datsun precedent? does it have to be scanned in? has anyone done this to their vehicle? or can you merely get a roll and apply yourself? link http://www.thedentdevils.com/ppf.html Quote
Hammer Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 It works. I have a friend whose got it on her M3. The only negative thing I can say about it is the cut line of the film over the bonnet. As they only applied the protective film about 1/3 up the bonnet of her M3, in most angles, it looks like someone has keyed her bonnet. Until you take a closer look and see it is only the edge of the film. It also does not help that her M3 is black. The only way to get around this is if the cut lines of the film exactly follows the cut lines of the bonnet, just like the Ford GT, they use in their website. But in most cars, that means covering the entire bonnet, and who'd want to do that? But if you can live with a semi-visible cut line of the film over your bonnet and side guards, then they do work extremely well. Quote
ozy Posted December 15, 2008 Author Posted December 15, 2008 i wouldnt be upset about doing the whole car in it. ireland and datsuns do not a good friend make, this country used to send the old datsuns into dirt pretty quick. my dad has told me horror stories of his old 120Y, bought new, rusted before his eyes. id apply the film to bonnet, wings, under, absolutely everywhere. but the info ive read so far is that the sheets provided are for makes and years and brands of cars. is it possible just to buy a roll and a heat gun and stick / stretch it on in the shed at home...? Hammer Posted December 16, 2008 Posted December 16, 2008 Personally, I won't do the whole car. A good rust proofing and regular waxing and polishing on none stone chip prone panels is as good. After all this is plastic and will dull the covered areas a little. I won't gloss as well as exposed paint. Not sure if you can get them in sheets. When she got her M3 done, they were already pre-cut to shape. Quote
ozy Posted December 17, 2008 Author Posted December 17, 2008 the underside of the car is very clean, was just gonna attack it with wax and re-do once a year. ive heard the sheets dull the colour a bit, willing to do that if it prevents stone chips. i found a place in ireland (in dublin) that regularly does this for prestigous cars, will email and ask questions and see where to go from there. if they are reasonable, ill just let them do it. thanks for your help hammer!
