Post-Ironic Posted February 16, 2019 Posted February 16, 2019 How's it going all, I've recently been enquiring around regarding different injection options for our L6 engines and came across a UK-based company called AT Power. They've developed what they call a "shaftless throttle body". I was pretty intrigued and decided to message them a bit further and ended up finding out that they'd be capable of putting together a kit to suit our engines. https://www.atpower.com/products/dcoe-6-cylinder Having spoken to Ben at AT Power, these throttle bodies allow considerably smaller throttle bodies than traditional designs, leading to better air speed with the same amount of flow (something like flow obstruction of 0.5% vs 10% on a traditional style throttle body). Seemed like a really neat set-up and the prices I've been told are really solid as well. The guys over there seemed pretty keen to put together a kit using the Mangoletsi manifolds as a base - somewhere around the $3300 mark for a full kit. Have any of you had experience with AT Power throttle bodies before? I stumbled onto them after coming across a knock-off on Facebook and they've been brilliant to deal with since. Quote
WhitleyTune Posted February 18, 2019 Posted February 18, 2019 (edited) Add another to your list! Working on this setup using custom EFI-hardware throttle blocks with variable bore centers to better suit the L series port layout. The castings are one-off so the throttle size, runner length etc on the kits are all made to order to suit customers build. Will be available later this year. AT power make good gear although I personally don't believe their hype over the shaftless design. Its easy to slab your throttle shafts ($60 option at EFI-H) to get 50% of the way to a shaftless design and going to a slightly larger throttle plate can account for the cross-sectional area difference i.e. a 48mm shaftless TB has the same cross sectional area as a 50mm shafted TB. I do think that if you are running them very close to the port then they will have an advantage though as they create less turbulence which if close to the port can rob power as there isn't enough runner length for the flow to recover before hitting the valve / short turn. Post-Ironic Posted February 21, 2019 Author Posted February 21, 2019 That's a really neat set-up you've got there, especially the intake manifold itself - any more details re:pricing and the like? Price was the main reason for me not purchasing an EFI Hardware kit; they were practically twice that of every other option. Have been speaking to the guys at AT Power a bit more and Ben reckons their 45s flow more than traditional 50s. At the very least these are sounding like an extremely well priced alternative to the OERs and Jenveys. Suffice to say I'm learning a lot. Still following up, if anyone has questions post them up and I'll pass them on! Quote
WhitleyTune Posted February 25, 2019 Posted February 25, 2019 Pricing is planned to be around the $3k AUD mark, maybe slightly cheaper depending on specifics. I am happy to make the manifolds to suit any throttle bodies you like though. The manifolds are 3d printed casting patterns so made to order and hence totally customisable. Much nicer than using a DCOE manifold with throttles bodies for the price I think. Do AT Power make throttles on closer bore spacings than the typical 90mm DCOE pattern? Post-Ironic 1 Quote
Post-Ironic Posted March 27, 2019 Author Posted March 27, 2019 Hey all, apologies for the slow follow up; had some not-fun stuff pop up in the last month. Ben got back to me regarding this, here's his full answer: "We do indeed make throttles at closer bore spacing, if we do that we’d likely go to one of our ‘universal’ style throttle body setups, which would be a bunch of our singles linked together to create a bank, and we can make these at custom spacings. We’re limited sometimes with how close we can get these because of the linkage, but usually these can be at fairly tight spacings." He also expressed a good bit of interest when I mentioned your manifolds and was curious as to pricing for the manifold itself? As mentioned, they're quite keen to put together a kit and something like that would really make it stand out. As it is I'm personally quite interested as well, I agree with your thoughts Whitley! Have you done any testing on performance vs. a DCOE style manifold? Quote
WhitleyTune Posted March 29, 2019 Posted March 29, 2019 Manifolds made to order are ~$1500aud range. Have not done any testing yet but will be doing some once I have the kit together! Post-Ironic 1 Quote

Would love to hear what the results are; if there's a noticeable advantage over DCOE-style I'd be very keen on getting one. Quote

WhitleyTune Posted June 9, 2019 Posted June 9, 2019 (edited) None on the full ITB kit sorry, been busy getting out some other custom manifolds - Just done this L28 for ZX12R ITB's and the A15 EFI manifold is getting a turbo plenum welded to it. Probably be near the end of the year for the ITB kit at this stage as I have just got a decent amount of work that will keep me busy for a couple months. Keep in touch if you are keen though!
