24OZ Posted May 21, 2008 Posted May 21, 2008 i noticed a guy on Ozdat is selling a complete rb25det conversion for a Z,from radiator to tailshaft for $3500 bolt in,he's in sydney, very cheap, fast and easy way to convert to an rb turbo http://ozdat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=12862 Quote
sco_aus Posted May 21, 2008 Posted May 21, 2008 Damn it, more money I could have saved. Damn it. Thats an opportunity of a life time. Hell, I might buy ZD44TTs 260 and finish it off Someone wanna sponsor me? Quote
zedevan Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 Thanks for the link! does anyone in syd wanna go check this out for me? i called the guy this morning and it all seems good, however i can't get up there for 3 weeks or so due to uni deadlines the only things i'm interested to know that i forgot to ask him is what style is the gearbox cross member since it says "bolt in" (ie bolt in after you drill holes?). and if its coming with any of the fuel setup? (i assume this is a no) What modifications would be needed to change it to an rb25 gearbox? a completely different cross memeber? and to clarify things, am i correct that you can not get an engineers certificate with an aftermarket ECU? (he currently has a wolf3d on it, not included in the price) he's selling it coz he's going to a 20B, sure will be an even awesomer beast after that! its a pity this isn't an rb26 as thats what i'm really after, but this is nice and cheap as stated (although intercooler and piping is also not included in price) Quote
zr240 Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 Hi Even If you change to a rb25det box you need a differnt tail shaft (has different size spline) and different crossmember and also you have to chop the original zed crossmember mounts of for gearbox clearance. Also rb25det boxes are around $1600 just for the box. I dont rekon the rb20 box would last long behind the turbo motor either. I personally dont think its a great deal as it doesnt come with ecu or turbo box or cooler (which the wolf is about 1500 and box is about 1600 cooler 500??) You would be better of getting a halfcut and using all the std ecu etc. Ash Quote
zedevan Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 yeah, i was thinking the same thing about the rb20 gearbox not hacking it from what i've read, but they rb20 one's still aren't cheap enough to just keep putting more of them into it huh? there was an rb25 one for sale for 1300 around the corner from my a while back i was very tempted to buy, lol he said he'd sell it with the cooler and piping for another $500, which i thought was fair, although i'd prefer to not have the piping go over the top of the motor, which would mean those items were both pointless. and with the wolf for another grand, which seems to b their price on skylines australia (although i'm not sure what version his is), but then if u can't get it past engineers without the stock ecu it would be a pain in the ass are you pretty confident about getting CH plates for a car that isn't engineered ash? i was thinking about getting CH plates for my car when i got it back on the road anyway at the end of the day i miss driving my zed, and with petrol prices the way they are... Quote
zr240 Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 Yer I dont need eng report for the CH plates. If you are in car club that has the vicroads/Cams requirments you just need a letter from the secretary of the club and thats about it the other option is to get a RW cert but I think that would be a little tricky (unless you know someone Ash Quote
zedevan Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 and i assume since its a race car your not worried about insurance? as they are probably the only other people who would care about engineers? except for cops, or are they easy on CH plates? Quote
zr240 Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 I am pretty sure you dont need an eng cert on CH plates but I could be wrong. Ash Quote
Scando Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 I don't think the RB20 boxes are too bad, especially for a road car. I race against 4 R32's which range from 200-260 rwkw. All run standard boxes and have no troubles with them including hard launches off the line. Will save weight compared to the RB25 box too. Quote
24OZ Posted May 25, 2008 Author Posted May 25, 2008 RB30 turbo box out of a VL Commodore is another option, around 7-800 bucks on calais turbo....if you are patient... not as smooth as the RB25DET box but tractor tuff Quote
rb25240z Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 Add updated hope this clears up most of peoples questions. The real advantage of this over a half cut is no waiting months for a workshop to stuff up the conversion then charge $10000 on top of your half cut. Quote
sco_aus Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 Thankyou, that is why I like this and it really is a good starting point. Quote
