Hydraulic handbrakes are really only good for rally or motorkhana work, and I'm not sure of the legality of fitting one to a road car. If it's for motorsport work then some of the specialist rally workshops should be able to point you in the right direction of what's needed. Quote
yellazed Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 I have just ordered a Wilwood big brake kit including 4 spot calipers for the rear. It comes with a line locker for a handbrake, as there is no handbrake mechanism in the caliper. This could be a solution for you. It is basically a small plunger operated device that pressurises the line to the rear and locks into place, clamping 'on' the rear calipers. There is a lever system available for about $350 plus installation costs. It is a Ford Cosworth setup out of UK and I am told it is a little difficult to install. It is for rally use and I don't feel it is worth the expense and the hassle for everyday use. I can put you onto someone if you want. PM me. I was toying with the idea of eventually mounting a separate small caliper with its own hydraulic system a la Ferrari and others, using a more conventional handbrake lever to act on the plunger. The line locker is a far quicker and easier solution, though. Quote
redrbzed Posted May 12, 2008 Author Posted May 12, 2008 The reason for the hydraulic handbrake is I am looking into putting the four piston calipers from the corvette to match my front 6 piston calipers. As I currently have the Falcon XF rear brake conversion with mechanical hand brake. I have found a mechanical handbrake caliper and am waiting on details so I can compare cost/difficulty of either setup. Quote
sco_aus Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 They arnt legal and I dont believe they can be engineered unless a "normal" type is still in there. This is because if you spring a break line leak and lose fluid, your car can roll down a hill. If you want one, a friend had a D2 one put in his AE86 and he reckons the cylinder on it was too big and you really had to reaf on it to get it to work, but when it did, it was great. Seymour motorsport have theyre own really good setups, but cost more. Quote
