Dupont Paint

Hello.

 

Im at the stage where I am nearly ready to repaint my 240z shell. The body work is completed and hi filled so ready for top coats. The colour im planning to paint the car which is a 3 stage, aparently works well with the Dupont 2k system. Last respray I used Dupont and it worked well so was planning to use it again.

 

My question is do they still exist? There web site dupontpc.com.au isn't up and can't seem to find a supplier in Sydney.

DuPont was purchased by ICI who are now part of the AkzoNobel group.

 

Give their sales and marketing a call on 03 9655 3881 and they should be able to advise you where you can source the DuPont product you are after or the rebranded equivelant.

Is there any other brand that you recommended? Leaning towards quality over cost.

The colour I want to do is soul red 41v if anyone has had experience spraying it.

I would probably recommend Standox.

 

If you are spraying it yourself then apart from the base color and candy coat, you will need to give some real consideration to the clear coat you use.

 

Many paint manufacturers have 2K clears that come in various flash types, spraying outside an oven may mean having to go for a faster clear coat, also then take into account the UV rating of the clear coat.

Planning on hiring a spray booth this time for health and dust. The place includes a half hour bake from memory.

Have you sprayed 41V before? or a candy at least? I'm using PPG waterborne paint these days so can't comment of dupont supplies.

No 41v or candy before so yes I am a bit concerned about not getting it consistent. I'm hoping the 41v is a little more forgiving than candy being a intercoat over the red but I'm probably wrong. Plan to spray jams and under bonnet first. If under the bonnet is stripy I will then paint the car blue and tell my wife I hate the red.

 

So far my experience is only a camper van inside and out, two Boats and the 350z blue on the car in my avatar.

 

From what I have read it seems some brands have trouble re creating the colour correctly.

This is the colour I sprayed my zed.

Engine bay first.

Door jambs then inside of panels.

Bolt back together then paint entire car.

17 coats all up. Base red. Metalic.candy then clear.

The trick in matching the engine bay to jambs to the outside is in the amount of candy coats. Bling colour but alot and I mean a lot of work. I am currently sanding back the clear getting it ready for a polish for that glass look. The paint job took 40 pluss hours to do as it is a three stage job. So unless you have some one who knows what they are doing you may have a few dramas,as my mate did mine and he is a professional spray painter.

Ps the colour,was about $2200 just in product DeBeer.

Can I ask how many litres did you get of base, effect and clear?

Im not planning on repainting the engine bay at this stage. So will save some paint there. Need to get it back on the road asap. Three weeks blew out to 3 years already.

Why did it need so many coats? I thought it was 2 base, 3 effect then 2/3 clear.

Was your painter happy with the debeer product?

4 ltr metalic efect

6 ltr candy

10 ltr clear

20 ltr thinners
