hayden5308 Posted October 22, 2007 Posted October 22, 2007 Am at the stage of doing my tranny mounts and am looking for some pics of what any one else has done or advice. Any help would much appreciated. Cheers. Quote
sco_aus Posted October 22, 2007 Posted October 22, 2007 Havnt had a problem yet with this setup, not the prettiest from inside the car, but will be covered later. Quote
JP Posted October 22, 2007 Posted October 22, 2007 I am at the moment having a copy of the original mounting tabs fabricated further back in the tunnel but still tied into the orginal support frame. To me it looked the soundest way, and when I spoke to an VASS engineer about it he agreed. Obviously its a fair amount of work and I am paying to have it done as its beyond what I am confident in doing. Especially with drive shaft angles etc. Quote
zedevan Posted October 22, 2007 Posted October 22, 2007 castlemaine rod shops one looks pretty full on, there's some pics of it on this guys site. I'm hoping/assuming it doesn't run any lower than the frame rails. sco-aus's one seems more logical to me... on that note has anyone got pics of an rb mounted using their kit? i'm sure i've seen some rb30's mounted with it before...i'm wondering how the engine ends up sitting. JP Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 Finally, here is my gearbox mount: (PS: This thread could be put into the engine swap forum?) Quote
sco_aus Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 Thats pretty hardcore, let us know how it goes. What sort of mulah are you looking at for that if you dont mind? Quote
JP Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 I havent got a bill yet, and don't know if the bill will be itemised or not. Should get one next week, but would think it would be less than $400 at a guess. Quote
sco_aus Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 You would hope, but it seems pretty good quality, so hopefully you get what you pay for. Quote
JP Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 Yep, its pretty much exactly what I wanted from a structural point of view considering the weight it is supporting. Also it maintains the servicability of an OEM setup. Might be expensive for some, but considering the cost of such a conversion, its pretty minor. My only regret is that I couldnt do it myself, but I am over cautious with saftey/structural items, my metal working skills are pretty basic, and I didnt know much about critical driveline system angles. sco_aus Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 Yeh I hear ya, even $1k seems like nothing nowadays when buying stuff. I think Ill save this page incase I need to re do mine sometime in the future. Geez you have proven to be a handy person to have around So you stopped with the engine mounts and sump and all that stuff did you? Im still using it all, the only problem I had was the sump bumping the steering rack a little, but we just spaced the engine mounts a little and the small dent remains so theres plenty of clearance now Quote
zedevan Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 it looks pretty dam good i hadn't properally thought through the fact you woudlnt' easily be able to drop the gearbox wtih the other mounts where abouts did you get it done? what other work did you get the shop to do? i'm wanting to start collecting parts to do a swap, but then my parents dont seem to keen on having half of another car sitting around for a year lol, and i dont see myself renting a place anytime soon with a garage so i might just have to pay to get it done, i guess it depends how much longer i can hold off! so does this mean ur car is nearly ready to go on the road? re sco's question, are you still able to get the sumps at a decent price? Quote
JP Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 I am using the same engine mounts that you have and haven't noticed clearance issues yet. I may have missed it as I have been concentrating elsewhere, perhaps it depends on the gearbox angle? I will take photos of this area as I am curious to know, as I had a small run of 3 sets made which were all identical and even those were essentially based on well known mounts. I brought the sumps in from overseas, not really interested in doing that anymore as it was a lot of trouble. My car is at Meridian Motorsport in Moorabin, I had seen their roll cages before and therefore was confident their fabrication was right up there. Might still be a while til the car is on the road, but I am trying to speed things up by using places like Meridian rather than my earlier backyard trial and error approach. The car is there getting the gearbox mount, tail shaft, CV's, exhaust and intercooler piping done. Looking at 280zx CV's at the moment as custom parts were quoted at $1700. I think sco_aus has done a lot of research in this area. Quote
sco_aus Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 The CV conversion is still going over my head, I keep on hearing about different things that can be done with the 280ZX shafts and im at a loss. I will try and find the ones I bought for around $1300. It all looks to be really good quality, I just have to get it in there. Quote
