jedders Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Hello from Scotland, I've tried getting an answer to a flexplate question in the northern hemisphere and now I've decided to try the southern hemisphere. I've read quite a bit about auto boxes being swapped for manuals so somebody may have an answer. I'm trying to find out if there was a flexplate made which had a ring gear screwed on instead of being welded on, possibly later in the production run with the 280ZX. I'm also trying to find out the diameter of a 280Zx flexplate. I've been told that the 2+2 and the turbos had a different flexplate to the other cars dating back to the 240Z which were interchangeable. I also have a picture of a ring gear I've sourced which I'm trying to identify if anyone can help. (file size too big to attach, will try and compress) The knowledge on these is limited on this side of the equator but maybe someone will have one in their garage following a swap. Thanks. Quote
jedders Posted May 5, 2013 Author Posted May 5, 2013 I'm trying to identify this ring gear. It is 332mm diameter to the outer section and 310mm to the inside of the outer ring. Thanks. Quote
D.O.G Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 I can't help identifying your ring gear, but it's not 280zx. My 12/'81 (series 2) 280zx 2+2, NA, auto, has a welded flexplate, with an OD of 305mm. I'm guessing that all L series flexplates would be the same OD, although there were differences in their profile to accommodate different torque converters. Quote
jedders Posted May 6, 2013 Author Posted May 6, 2013 Thanks for the reply. The ring shown has 2 studs, 10 threaded screw/ bolt fixing points and one fixing point has two smaller threaded fixing points either side. I've previously been told its not a 240Z manual flywheel but i'm still not sure about the variety of 280's. Thanks. Quote
pauly_adams Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 that is definitely not off a 280zx nor will it be off any other z car to the 350z as there all welded on Quote
jedders Posted May 6, 2013 Author Posted May 6, 2013 Thanks again for the reply, The ring was sold to me as being off a 1981 280ZX 2+2 Auto but as yet no one anywhere is aware of a 'non welded' flexplate but I'll let the subject run, It'll be good reference knowledge in the future when I update the other forums. jedders Posted October 23, 2013 Author Posted October 23, 2013 Just to finish this post off and for future reference of anyone wanting to replace a 240Z flexplate, the 280ZX flexplate is a direct replacement. Quote
