zedfanvic Posted August 7, 2005 Posted August 7, 2005 Hi, Can anyone tell me what the legalitys are in regards to VIC roads when you swap over to a skyline RB20 engine? Do you need an eng certficate? Do you need to swap the fuel tank? Thanks Quote
NR240 Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 I am tipping you will need an engineers cert if you want to comply. I remember Vicroads told me that i needed an engineers cert if i wanted to upgrade an L24 to a 26 or 28!! because technically it is a diff motor. No idea re: fuel tank, call Vicroads. I have harnesses installed and no engineers cert, been pulled over many times and never once asked about the seatbelt mounts so some things you can get away with but i imagine that the motor is going to look non-original so prob best to get that done properly. S130ZED Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 Before you go ahead with this, I would have a word with Drunkenmaster. There is a lot more work than a simple engine swap for the RB into a Zed. All that work is going to require an engineer's certificate. Quote
Zeddophile Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 due to the work in fitting an RB, I'd say they'll make you get an engineers certificate.... As far as the fuel tank goes, its not easy to tell a carby fuel tank from an efi tank in most cars, however if you plan to drive hard an efi tank or custom job would be better, due to the extra baffles. As far as an L26/28 swap, you don't ask, you just rock up with it in. They're unlikely to cause hassles, due to the fact it is the same external dimensions, appearance, and bolts straight in with no modifications. Quote
Natez Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 talk to a engineer before you even pay money for the motor, as they'll tell you what needs to be done so you can work out if its really what you want.. ive been in a rb20det Z and it was a great experiance Any 6 Lseries is a simple engine swap with vicroads, as its the same Series engine but just differant displacement... so its all fine Quote
zr240 Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 yer you need an eng cert if its anything other than l24 in 240 or l26 in 260 but I have changed my 240 to l28 with no probs just told vic roads it was a option for the car. but if you go for rb or other motor you should get an eng cet. Ash Quote
[PANDA-Z] Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 if u still haven't found out about engineers i will tell u u need one i know this because i work at vicroads certain adr's are affected such as emissions plus when you increase power to the fly wheel by over 10% u need one straight out and as far as increasing from l24 block to l26 block and so on you increase the amount of torque the car has and i have spoken to head engineer about this and he says u need vass cert aswell and if you swap and someone just put on at vicraods now police can give defect asking for vass cert and only give one week to get it :x if anyone have any questions about this kind of thing just pm me Quote
Natez Posted September 20, 2005 Posted September 20, 2005 what is a vass certificate???... the number one reason why id be getting a engineers certificate, with any car, is because of insurance reasons, getting defected by police is not a huge issue rather than having void insurance and having a huge bill Quote
sco_aus Posted April 17, 2006 Posted April 17, 2006 Yeh you do have to get it engineered, Drunkemaster is definately the man to talk to, he got me my mounts, sump and pickup. Also, I kept my original fuel tank, just had a surge tank put in. Also here is the Nissan genuine parts for the engine side of the conversion: 11110-20P00 RB20DET Oil Pan (Rear Sump) 15050-20P03 RB20DET Oil Pickup 15059-V5001 RB20DET Oil Pickup O-Ring 11232-41L00 Z31 Right Hand Side Motor Mount 11233-41L00 Z31 Left Hand Side Motor Mount 11220-01L10 Motor Mount Insulators Just found em on HybridZ. One thing I found with the mounts is I had put a spacer in to lift the left side of the engine a bit, because the sump was bumping on the steering rack. Also be careful when it comes to front strut braces, mine was rubbing on the intake plenum and now they both have bits shaved off, I got my braces from T3 in the states. Quote
zedevan Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 on the phone to insurance companies i was asked if i had a 2.2, 2.6, 2.8 or 5.7 litre engine as all were factory options  hehe Quote
Zeddophile Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 lol - few people pulling the 'factory option' dodgy then..... wonder what the hell the 2.2 is about though? unless you meant to write 2.4, that sounds like a stroked SR20 or RB20.... can't really think of any worthwhile 2.2s... Quote
zedevan Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 yeah 2.2...weird huh? then also lots of gen 3 ls1's? hehe Quote
