Bigfella Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 I'm think I will start building a rotisserie in the next few weeks. From the reading I have done on the site I have a couple of options. Build one form a couple of engine stands or Build one form scratch. I like the idea of using a couple of stands, But I am curious I read some where here that you can't buy steel the same dimensions as the cheap engine stands. Has this been a problem for any one? If so what is the solution? Also I was wondering what the minimum hight off the ground, I can get away with. I have a very low roof. Does anyone have some plans or dimensions I can steel. Thanks Matt Quote
madz Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 Hi bigfella, zzzzed from the forum built one and made a video about it, here is the link - http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=zedl28et#p/u/24/5e1B3Z2C2ac Cheers, Jane Quote
Bigfella Posted October 6, 2010 Author Posted October 6, 2010 Thanks Jane I have seen that one Mick has made, Nice and heavy duty. I would be interested in what people have done with engine stands. Cheers Matt Quote
zzzzed Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 thanx that saved me the effort. Im not sure what metal is worth now but when i built mine it cost me about $250 in metal Quote

zzzzed Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 did I ? no the metal was all new and un used Quote
FLEXZED Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 hey big fella have a look here http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,5610.30.html i used 2 cheap eBay special engine stands i cut them down and welded in a smaller sq pipe to give me the height The metal cost me about $150 height of the ground is 1250mm. I added a 300mm insert into the vertical tube of each engine stand. Be very careful when you do this to make sure the pivot point is horizontal. The axis of rotation needs to be 75mm above the bumper bar mounts both front and rear. I can rotate mine with one hand. I also fitted 4" Castor wheel - very cheap on eBay. The small wheels fitted to the standard engine-stand make it difficult to move when there is a significant load applied. hope this helps Loui Quote
Bigfella Posted October 6, 2010 Author Posted October 6, 2010 Thanks Loui So it looks like the inserts you welded in a a bit smaller is that correct. Did it cause you to much trouble joining them? I notice that some people mount too the bumper mounts at the front others run steel right under the chassis rails by the looks. does it make much difference ? Quote
FLEXZED Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 hey mate Yes the inserts are smaller and i run mine all the way down inside to make sure the support is on the base of the engine stand i also found it easier to weld like this Under the chassis rails you have a least 3 bolt points on either rail , i like this as it seems to be a stronger place to secure the stands This is peter allen ( forum member) design that i copied Loui Quote
ackent1 Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 This one cost me over $600 in materials But considering I spent 9 months cutting out rust it was money well spent It was copied from the Zfactory design, ie portable can be sent to the sandblasters etc while on the rotisserie Quote
Bigfella Posted October 6, 2010 Author Posted October 6, 2010 Man that is one seriously heavy duty rotisserie ! Quote
handsandwhich Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 My 0.02 cents worth. Better to make it height and width adjustable if you can. That way when you are finished with it, you can on sell it to someone else that can easily use it on various other cars. Made mine with a winch/come along at each end so that I can lift/lower it by myself at anytime. Easier to work on and easier to load/unload the car on the rotisserie Quote
