Michael Posted September 3, 2008 Author Posted September 3, 2008 Im not sure actually from memory when i first started using comps its what people were doing orta got stuck on me xP eh ^^ Quote
Brabham Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 Hey Michael just wondering what prep you/ your mate do on the bodywork after it has gone back to bare metal. Do you put a coat of rust converter or rust proofer on or maybe a zinc based primer to help prevent the rust from coming back? How many coats of paint and what type are you using e.g. first primer, then 2-pak, or enamel etc. Thanks for any info. Quote
Michael Posted September 4, 2008 Author Posted September 4, 2008 When im going back to bare metal, Sand it using 240/320 then use a Good cleaner, Followed by a rust preventative i think it is, (Products name ive forgotten oO) Then cleaning again after rust stuff. Then bogging it Followed by etch primer. Spray putty ( if needed ) Then a surface primer, Followed by a base coat of black that will be going all around, then will be spraying the outside In this sort of color ^^ Pic of a Color sample a Good mate from work Did up for me + A Gear knob that i have sanded back to Real wood Then repainted And Cleared * Note the 2nd pic of the paint sample, Looks much much darker in life, Camera flash? oO Quote
Brabham Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 Nice color choice that finish looks great. Time to befriend some spraypainters! Quote
Michael Posted September 9, 2008 Author Posted September 9, 2008 Yeah i reckon, Well actually at my new job i have become good mates With the spray painter there, And it also looks like ill be starting a spray painting apprenticeship Thee at some point in the near future ^^! This weekend i didn't get as much done as i wanted to, but i did pick up a lot of supply's i needed to keep going ^^ including a 2 and a 1/2 inch Fuel pressure gauge that will replace the Clock in the dash once i get the Triple weber's ^^ Cost? 120 down to 80 Down to 40 Tehn in the pile of $20 Guages on special? >=D!! (All others were water temp) (Still need a fuel gauge isolator to install in the "Cockpit") But yeah here are some updated pics with front spoiler installed (Need 2 more screws for the sides) Got a heap more sanding/bogging/perfecting done, Such such, And installed a pioneer Ipod ready head unit that looks the part, And replaced a heap of rubbish interior screws with black Matching ones all round Just to add to the complete look of it, (will get some interior pics as soon as i finish Wiring the amp up zzz) Quote
reverendzed Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Fantastic Michael, you are doing an awesome job, keep at it even though you may not be getting all the time you want, you are still making awesome progress. Can't wait till you're on the road and cruisin with the club. Rev. Quote
Michael Posted September 10, 2008 Author Posted September 10, 2008 Yeah Hopefully won't.......... zzz... bad news, I got shitty the other night When igot yet another "Sell it, buy a working car" such such comment And pushed the car forward a little more Then noticed it was abit hard to push.... It was in 4th gear DOH! so now i reckon it will all need timing re-adjusted zzz but on the plus side, One inner fender Striped and repainted in a Sound deadening paint And im exstatic with the outcome xD - I plan on finishing the other one tomorrow Aswell as fixig the head unit (Connect speaker directly to headunit, Play song Nothing comes out? oO Something to do with audio rca cable ?) Anyway heres some pics of the Inner fender well ^^ Quote
fufu Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 Mike, you wouldn't be asian background would ya? I get that convo all the time... the "why did you spend so much money on a car that doesn't work" "how much more money are you going to throw into it before you can use it" etc... etc.. Quote
Robstar Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 Ignore them all I reckon! But sometimes even I find it hard to ignore the "Why did you spend so much money on a bomb" ARGH IT'S NOT A BOMB YOU IGNORANT _____ (insert random appropriate word); nothing gets my blood boiling faster. In any case, great work Mike! Keep it up and soon those fools who doubt your actions will be drooling from the corner of their mouths over wanting your car. Quote
stevo_gj Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 I'm pretty sure that's a common theme for more than just Asian families. I get that from my mates lol Although my mum loves the fact that I'm passionate about my car, so i guess I'm lucky. Quote
Michael Posted September 11, 2008 Author Posted September 11, 2008 Haha, Nah not at all mate Australian, (the scottish kind) Yeah i get pretty shitty about people saying its a bomb, But My mum + Sister love its Sports car feel, And i'm Lucky enough to Live accross the road from a real Datto Fella, So its cool going back and fourth seeing the Common things between Different Dattos And on another note im also lucky enough to work only 5k's from ash's place so if i ever need a real kick start i can make a trip and see some Webers in action! (Only seen Stevo's on youtube but it was enough for me to "Know" im going to buy them ^^) And also many people at work seem real interested in it remembering days where there teacher's/Cousins or uncles owned them, All in all its a good positive feel about the car, Just sometimes It gets to ya abit, But eh That's life i suppose - Michael Quote
Dingo Dave Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 I purchase cars in the same state, I then restore them and sell them. If it wasn't for people like us then there would be a lot of cars out there being scrapped just because they have a bit of surface rust. Get over it. We can do what ever we want thats the joy of freedom. Don't Mock him and don't hinder him because its not something you would do. Oh and rent wrecks to riches or rides. There are a lot of us out there and we are the ones willing to put the love into the cars. Mate you are doing a bang up job and the majority of us respect that and will help you to make them jealous in the end. Quote
Michael Posted October 2, 2008 Author Posted October 2, 2008 Wow, Well it has been along time since i last posted in this Journal, Although i have been working hard o the car wheneer possible just the process had been going rather Slow, As in Replaceing rusted out botls such such, The nitty gritty unapealling things That arnt worth showing On the plus side the interior is all apart again for the Sterio to go in ^^ (Thanks to Sash's mate at Jb?) Anyway, I talked to him quite abit about my zed and his mates, Such such Anyway he was extreamly helpful and did everything cheap for me. ^^ I wont upload any pics of a ripped up interior or my Temporary Gaffa taped Front seat bottoms (That will be on the to do list after the car is road registed, But here is the Goodie that has been completed! The engine bay was sprayed over 2 days, Buy myself (apprentice Spraypainter at a Great new job at a Awesome sign company,) Learning of one of the Quickest + Best spraypainters around ,anyway Yes the enginebay was sprayed jet black on the left side on the first day and came up a treat, Although on the left side ( Drivers side ) I decided to leave Things like main wiring harness, Brake cylinders as I diddnt want to risk haveing to replace Anything more by blowing something up, In the end It all turned out Ok in my book, Note the Bog behine the amp Fuse box Thayt i forgot to sand back =.= aswell as some in the front radiator support, but Sanding and rebogging on that real hot day just seemed abit Silly as my bog was drying before i had even properly mixed it, And since the wind stopped for a matter of a hour or 2 i knew i just had to sprayt it now or Wait for another blue moon As the wind blows straight into my garage (*Note radiator /thermo fans will end up covering the radiator supper bog, But eh its a street car, And since ive done it And im happy with it I really dont Mind what other people think, Anyway heres some pics! Note* The head is the new head i brought off Ash (Thanks heaps mate!) And The old cam, Aswell as the old Valve cover, Note* The cheap gun i brough off the internets starting performance on the 2nd day of spraying on one of the strut tower's seam, Not nearly as noticeable without camera flash, but yeah, Never buy a cheap gun or you (most likely) will get a cheap finish, Luckyly the first day it sprayed as well as a 600$ one, On the 2nd day after a full service it managed, Just managed to finish the job Quote
Dingo Dave Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 Hey Mate. Yeah looking good mate. Cheap guns will do that to ya. Yeah i learnt the hard way. Keep up the good work mate. Quote
