"Australian" HS30's never came with factory Air Conditioning.

And you do realize none of the factory RS30 Air-con components fit into a HS30 body, right?
To do it, you need a RS30 dash and complete wiring harness to make it work, as well as cutting hols in the firewall to route the hoses...
Not impossible, but a it's a huge job.

You'd be better off fitting a something like a Vintage Air system:

Edited for clarification because Mr Thomas took his pedantic pill this morning.

Apart from the ones that did.

Japanese market got factory-fit aircon system from the get-go in 1969. It was still available when the HS30-prefixed models hit the Japanese market in late 1971. Both my ZGs had factory-fit aircon when they were new.

and here's another diagram

http://www.carpartsmanual.com/datsun/Z-1969-1978/electrical/air-conditioner

is looks like a pretty basic setup, so I plan to use an existing evap and manufacture the two part housing to put it into so it fits between the dashboard and the

the way i'm reading it, is that cold air will only come from the centre vent

looks like the top slider has an extra setting on the right, but i'm not fussed

I'm sure you were more than aware Alan, that I was referring to Australian delivered HS30's. And not an uncommon (here in Australia) JDM chassis...
But I do know how much you enjoy splitting hairs... :)

I am going down the same route (but easier with a 260z) and interested to know what you will be doing for the vacuum parts/controls?

Can you not pick up a complete set-up from a parted-out car fro your 260Z? Plenty of 260Zs in Aus seemed to have A/C.

You'll need the A/C version of the heater control panel with its extra controls.

That is correct however, once the air con failed, it appears the first thing done is to remove anything air con related from the engine bay.

Have one :) Mine on the left, A/C replacement to be installed on the right.

right, that's the type of box i will need to fabricate and that's what's shown in the jdm pic.

as far as the vacuum question is concerned, from what i can tell from the pics, the whole vacuum circuit is only used to pull up the throttle once the compressor is switched

i think thats what ficd is

from what i read , you can just nudge up the idle adjuster to 900 and that will be sufficient to not stall the car

Unfortunately (on the 260z system) not, there are also some diaphragms that are controlled by vacuum system, as shown below.

what's the long piece? i recognise the pulley and the hoot is for the fic

also

i was going to grab a condensor off a civic, but that is the wrong direction - its tall and skinny, whereas the z is short and fat

does anyone know if condensors from other makes will phyiscally fit?
