Interesting Point.  But, if there is such high demand and desire to own a car, and very little supply, personally, I wouldn't worry about the final distance I would have to travel to view the car.  I know how hard it was for me to purchase my car.  Thankfully, the main reason that I was able to purchase it was that others weren't willing to travel the distance.

Anyways, back to sitting patiently by the phone for the right person to call me up....

To be honest, if you are wanting to fork out nearly 40 grand for a classic car that will be more or less a garage glamour driven every second weekend, youve got the cash to pay a few hundred bucks on flights to view a pristine example:)

I would tell them to jump before i negotiated that into the price haha we arent talking about a clapped out corolla for 800 bucks

I agree I'd travel to go see the car no matter how far away it was. Done it plenty of times for my cars. Or I'd hire someone to inspect it who specialises in Classic vehicles - which would probably be cheaper than a flight + accommodation + rental car anyway....

Sounds like a bunch of cry babies to me. Anyone asking you to drop the price without seeing the car isn't really serious in my opinion...

yep a perfect example was when I sold my ute last year. was a 2006 vz sv6 ute......yes it was a crumbydoor but it had 30,000kms on it was absolutely spotless (I mean new condition) and was 14 grand.....so many people interstate used this as an excuse to negotiate...... even the guy who ended up buying it at 13 grand tried to talk it down because he had to fly from up north and then, god forbid pay for petrol to drive it home.....I actually hung up on him the first time and he called me back haha:) in the end he bought it sight unseen met him at a cafe handed him a key and he drove it away.......was the most bizarre experience i have ever had...... people are just tight even if they know the deal is good:)

Seller's Comment

DEPOSIT TAKEN - Awaiting full payment.

Argh!  Maybe I'm a hopeless salesperson!

Both of the cars that have sold with in a VERY short time have been '71s though.  I'll take some comfort in that....

My 2c worth. When I found and purchased my 240Z its was some 650km's from where I was living at the time and the seller was pretty firm on his sell price. If the car ticks all the boxes or close to it, why wouldn't you spend the travel expense to go and view the car and spend some time with it. That's what I did as it was the right car for me and what I was after, in the end I was lucky enough to negotiate chopping my travel cost off the price of the car and drove it back to Melbourne, it was a great drive, even though I did it solo.

God I love this market. It's insane!

As a seller you agonise over price and list it as high as you think it can go and then it sells in 24 hours leaving you to wonder...

A bit like Sydney/Melbourne real estate, great if you already own the asset not so great if you're trying to get into the market. :(.

Personally I would always price high and come down. The S30z has global appeal and with our currency taking a dive as of late (and not likely to go back up for a while) these cars will appear cheap to those looking in...

Of course it could all pop (Classic Car Bubble and all that) but unlike a stock or share at least you have something left over that is a bit of fun to own....

Another thing to consider is that the strength of the $USD now makes their market more expensive (which used to be the cheapest in the world to purchase an S30z in). When you factor in shipping / compliance costs etc.. That is another $7-$8k on top of purchase price, then if you want to convert to RHD well... that could get expensive...Especially when a 'good' 240z in the US now costs $20-$30k for an 'unrestored' example.

So $40k for a car like the Green car starts to look cheap and it's already correct hand drive.

did i miss something.........when the car was first listed it wasnt 45 was it???? thought it was under 40?

Interesting it was listed at $38K now it appears to be $45k.... If he's taken a deposit I shudder to think he might be trying to extract more out of other sellers to renege on his deal.

It is possible buyer offered higher price to secure the car also I suppose.

Regarding the green car;

I still had the page open from 8:25pm last night and have attached a screen capture to confirm that the price was at $38,000 and the status as "DEPOSIT TAKEN - Awaiting full payment.".

While I am talking about it - no-one else commented on the incorrect door mirrors, the missing luggage straps and the re-chromed but unpainted hubcaps. It is still a very very nice car though.

sounds like one of those kind of sellers...

when you are talking about original........you are really starting to split hairs if you are picking on the mirrors a few straps (which i think were there but under the rear carpets) and original but chromed hubcaps. these arnt phase 3s just yet Gongz

Why else would you buy a car like that if you aren't a trainspotter? It's the very nature of concourse.

The mirrors would have been fender mirror type originally I'd say... The hubcaps and valve cover are an easy enough lick of paint. The radio seems to be missing the red needle on the tuner? For whatever reason it's white?

Main radiator hoses should be braided type, various items could be re-yellow chromate plated... I'm sure there is a couple of other minor details missing etc..

But to me the point is the car is very very close to concourse and you'd be silly not to buy based on a few issues like that if you're ultimate goal was 100% totally original.

my knowledge of original spec is pretty lacking as mines is so far from it :) i didnt realise Aus cars had fender mirrors? wing type id imagine not the bullet type? Always thought it was guys wanting the jdm look

Sometimes people read too much into what you type on the internet. This seems to be one of those times.  :'(

The seller said in his ad-

"Collector and concourse car, numbers matching.

Unmodified, unmolested, original 240Z"

I was merely pointing out some discrepancies that I noticed - as Gavin has now also done.

I did say that I thought it is a "very very nice car". I would not have been put off buying it if I was in the market.

Posted

haha no not at all :) I appreciate there are purists but there are some on the forum that take it to the next level (not implying you are one of them).... it is unmolested and original bar a few minor details that are easily rectified. Sometimes I just chuckle at the nit picky stuff i see on the forum:) partly because I still see my car as a neat but modified datsun that I bought 10 years ago for a reasonably small sum of money.
