Administrators gav240z Posted May 17, 2018 Administrators Share Posted May 17, 2018 Hey Folks,Can anyone recommend a powder coaters in the Inner West of Sydney (preference)? I want to get my 240z airbox powdercoated in that lovely orange colour. However a lot of powdercoating places have terrible websites and specialise in industrial fences etc.. so may not be good with smaller intricate items like an Airbox?Looking for recommendations or if you've got a kit and done it at home with success (Eastwoods?).The guy who did my RX-7 brakes only does it as a hobby and his oven wasn't big enough to fit the airbox. PeterAllen
Gary. Perhaps a bit further out for you young fellows who have to work for a living, but I used this mob at Penrith to have the rocker covers powder-coated and I was very happy with the result. They are very much into custom builds. The chap had a Datsun 1600 with an LSx under the hood! https://www.hyperautomotive.com.au/ Edited May 17, 2018 by PeterAllen
Dionysus
I have a friend near Richmond who is a powder coater, he's a bit out of the way but as a car enthusiast has done many car parts in the past..Are you looking to have them match the colour? Dionysus
Yes, or as close to the original colour as possible. I'll send him a picture of one and see what he says about the colour. gav240z

After 45 years in a hot engine bay the paint is obviously faded to a less than stellar orange. How it currently looks. https://photos.app.goo.gl/KhtmEN25s6iamtV93 Here is an example that was on eBay a while ago (in very good shape). https://photos.app.goo.gl/IgMSFTyq6Hwbx7Wj1 It looks almost blood orange. Brabham
Why not paint it Gav? I had assumed they were painted and they shouldn't get that hot. You could use heat proof Chevy Orange.
PeterH
Having had a lot of dealings with a powder coater here, I was told that powder coat had a relatively low tolerance to heat. Does any body know more about that...just thinking about the proximity to the exhaust manifold.

Yeah I have heard lots of stories about powdercoating etc.. but I actually think it's a very durable finish and a great option. Some good information in this video from Eastwoods. Although the small guy won't shut up for 20 seconds. I am actually considering doing the underbody components (suspension), swap bars etc.. with powdercoating. I heard people on here say that if you get a chip in it, then it can rust underneath etc.. but honestly since when were the underbody struts, sway bars, etc.. a concern for rust on these cars? Also you can do multiple coats of powder which should help resist issues like chipping.
TOO60Z
Industrial machinery enamel is the way to go. Look up Lacnam paints girraween. Powder coat is crap on car parts. If it was any good it would be widely used, it isn’t.
