Promethium144 Posted July 25, 2018 Author Share Posted July 25, 2018 (edited) Hi peoples Been a while since i did an update so here goes....... began working on the drivers side rear quarter. unfortunately i made a mistake...... the previous owner of the car looked to have attempted a repair on this panel but never finished. i was able to get the panel smooth save for a single stretch that resulted in a small buckling in the panel. Here is where i made my mistake i decided to cut a small slot remove the streacted metal and relieve the stress in the panel, which worked very well. However my welding skills were not yet up to the challenge of fixing this slot...... it went bad...... the single weld become many as i chased my tail...... this then resulted in me cutting a bigger hole this is where i made mistake number 2 ..... i didn't cut enough out. i left some if my booga welding behind.... at first i thought i had fixed it but no i now began chasing cracks which ended in cutting more holes and more patches....... (don't worry i'm slowly learning my lesson) so now with all that "practice" i knew that the only way to fix it right was to cut the whole area out and fix it with one large, one piece, patch....... now understanding what i did wrong, what i needed to do to fix it and now having the skill enough to fix it the final repair came out pretty well even if it never should have been this way in the first place. But as i said, lessons were learned skills were developed and when i have to do it again to fix some places where i do have to cut areas out due to rust and not because i stuffed up, things will go much better. In fact they already are. The final result, the whole panel still in need a little smoothing out but also needs some work in other areas as well before i finish that process. As has been said before some of the worst things to repair are the man made ones. Guess the car is still on the rotisserie? As Jeff said, we learn nothing if we're not willing to make mistakes. What sort of welder are you using? I've been practicing with a gasless Mig welder I bought. But it's not as easy as it looks, especially working with thin sheet metal. Practice makes perfect they say, well hopefully.. Steep learning curve but im getting the hang of it. This is my first welder and i have never welded with anything else. Promethium144 Posted July 29, 2020 Author Share Posted July 29, 2020 (edited) Ok so it has been a long time since I have updated this thread, have moved in the mean time and had to build another garage for the Z and just life in general. But work has still been done. Thought I would update in chronological order over a few posts, so here goes. After the learning experience of the rear quarter panel it was time to begin tackling the rear hatch area. As can be seen there was not too much metal left And with proper allocation of grinder the rust was cut out and a new patch fabricated. Some welding and some more grinding and it was looking much better The Next job was the rear right corner, I don’t know what happened to it in its past life, but it wasn’t pretty. The area was being held together with poprivets had holes drilled in random places, holes and tears and some very dodgy welding. So again, out with the angle grinder… Some creative patches made and begun to stitch it back together. The end result came out quite nice, still needs a little work to smooth things out and a little filler here and there will be needed, but it’s now it's nice and solid. Promethium144 Posted August 4, 2020 Author Share Posted August 4, 2020 (edited) So since I purchased the car we had already been looking to buy a home, and so with much searching and grief we were successful in that endeavour. One problem with that, no garage again, so before being able to continue on the car I had to partake in 260z garage build version 2 and the car had to go to bed in a mates shed for a while. And while I was in a construction mood, I decided to make a custom toolbox And with that all out of the way and the car in its new home back to more….. rust. O and after parting with a small part of my soul, I acquired a set of these…. 44 Mikuni Solex carbs So back to that Rust. I don’t have a picture of how it started but i'm sure many of you will know the series of events. O look a few little rust holes, o well I will just cut out that little bit there.. Hmm that escalated quickly. Well that’s it for now will show you how that little adventure turns out in the next instalment.
