The Build 73 240Z

Hi Guys

Been wanting to get the build thread on the Z for a while now and finally the time has come.

Currently White 73 240z unfortunately Auto with a L24 engine. New plans are to strip the engine and the 3 speed out and slip in a L28 with a L28 5speed.

The flairs are definitely going to be taken off and if needed replace the inner and outer guards. Interior will get replaced with a new kit from the U S and A and I'm replacing the Recaro seats back to factory seats. I recently purchased some seat covers that will need to get put on the stock seats I have.

Colour I'm still not sure if I should stick to a off white or head down the 918 orange path. Both will look nice but I'm not 100% on this one.

Managed to get my hands on a L28 and 5 speed so the manual conversion can get done. I pulled out the L24 and the 3 speed and cleared the engine bay to get it restored and resprayed. The car is heading to the panel shop tomorrow to get the engine bay done first.

Currently has some surface rust on the driver's chassis railings with no visible holes. Will get it blasted so we can fully see whats under that paint and rust, but will be repaired anyways.

What do you guys think I should do on the paint colour, off white or 918 orange????

The S30 has classical lines which can be brought out by using the right colour which is certainly not white.

Hi Richard

I totally agree with this quote. I have seen many 240's or 260's that don't look right in their particular colour that's why I'm hesitating to go down the white path.

I'm a fan of the white, Japanese race cars are traditionally white. I'd go with the original Nissan white since it sounds like you are keeping it relatively stock aside from engine.

Me too Brabham, I love a white classic car. I particularly love a  1969 Mercedes 280sec in the classic off white but I cant compare the 240z with these types of cars but they still are classical.

Well received a call and went out to the panel shop today. Engine bay has been blasted and epoxy primered and seems like the car has had a font ender at some stage of its life.

Going to see if the front end is straight, if not it's going to get pulled. Also I'm going to get all the extra holes in the engine bay filled up for that cleaner look.

Let's see how we progress with this one

Also I have decided to go down the 918 Orange path with this build. As much as I love white the 918 orange stands out and makes the car look like it's been restored. White looks classic but just makes the car look standard.

Cheers

Youhan

Sound reasoning.

Good choice.

Hey Guys

Been to the smash repairs and engine bay is done. I had most of the extra holes filled to give it a cleaner look.

Colour is Porsche 911 GT3 RS Orange that looks amazing. In different lights it looks like a different shade of Orange.

Had the L28, 5spd, pedal box and tailshaft delivered so going to get that put in over the next week or so

Little update.

Took the break booster out to Burt Brother's today in Fairfield to get it restored $270 not bad. Also ordered a slave cylinder $20 for the 280box and ordered a exceedy heavy duty clutch $280 also not bad from Burt Brother's. Should be ready Monday afternoon for pickup.

I got a quote from Repco for the clutch kit and they said $420, not sure on the price hike

The master cylinder I have is new so no point on getting that fixed. But booster had seen better days.

UPDATE:  Picked up the reconditioned booster on Tuesday including the slave cylinder and clutch kit. Cant complain on their work and timing on getting all the parts sorted. Ill just use this until I upgrade the brakes and change it to a R33 Booster and master cylinder

Waiting on getting all the fuel lines to get re done including all the pipework and hoses for the clutch and brake lines on the coming Monday so should be looking much cleaner with new stainless steel pipe work

Major Update to this thread.

Enough on the 240z, managed to put some time away yesterday to set up my Hark offset smoker.

Finally after 2 hours assembly it's finished, time to glaze the inside with oil and bake it in to seal and protect the internals.

Depending on the weather next weekend I'll be heading out to the Australian Meat Emporium in Alexandria to pick up a full boneless leg of lamband smoke it up.

Ahhhh smoking mmmmmm

Hey guys

Small update on this build

Had Ray from Mobile Brake Solutions out yesterday to run new stainless steel brake lines. Should be back in a few days to finalise the fuel lines once the engine is in.

Also I'm going to remove the X member and steering arm and get them sandblasted and powder coated black. Also, will clean up that rubber on the firewall for the steering arm, looks ugly painted in orange.

Cheers

Also picked up my 73 seats from the motor trimmers, had the new seat covers put on and had new padding fitting and some new springs too. The old covers were red and all ripped up so need to go.

I have some Recaro seats in there currently not sure if I should get rid of them, they need re trimming too. I'll put up some pictures when I rip them out. Not my style.

Cheers

Headed out today and took the X membe, control arms, sway bar, steering column and other bits to get powder coated at Advanced Sandblasting and Powder Coating in Blacktown. Asked all the parts to get coated in Matte Black, should look well with the colours I'm going with.

Also took the steering rack to get reconditioned, as it was leaking grease and the boots were all damaged from the sandblasting when the engine bay got done. Should be ready in a few days.

Even though the body's not done getting all these things sorted adds up money wise, but I'd rather it done now than rip everything apart again later on.

Cheers

Nice work, they will look great after powder coating.

Just wondering if you are going to press the bushes out of the lower control arms or leave them

In during the process?

Hey Cozza, no they got pressed out after I took the pictures. Need to buy new nuts and bolts but not sure if I should just get black ones or get the brass ones.

Yeah they look so grubby, they probably never been cleaned.

Those seats look really good. Where did you buy the covers from?
