OZ001
I just spent 2 days trying to figure why the gearbox won't fully mate to the L28? I bought the right items to do the conversion. 240mm fly wheel 240mm HD clutch Pedals Etc The confusing part is everytime I try to ram the gearbox home, it leaves about 20mm . Anyone had this kind of issue when doing the auto to manual conversion? Urgently need help on this one. I can't remember how many times I've taken the gear box off. C.A.R.
Did you remove the Auto flex-plate adapter from the back of the crankshaft? If you have, then did you install the correct install the correct spigot bush in the crankshaft? d3c0y
Retro Z
Clutch not aligned properly. Or spigot bush is damaged or not installed. Incorrectly installed or wrong height bearing collar. Is there spring tension on the clutch fork? gav240z
OZ001
Everything is lined up properl, it just won't go mate the block. We tried running in with bolts but as soon as you tighten up one bolt the otherside separates further. Spigot bush installed. No spring tension Bearing collar? Thought all L28 boxes were the same
Retro Z
There is like 8 different collar heights and pressure plate heights. Linton, Andrew_L26 and gav240z
C.A.R.
Process of elimination: remove the bearing carrier / clutch fork assembly & then try to install the gearbox. Select 4th gear & turn the output shaft as you slide the input into the clutch. If it still won't go home, there is an issue with the clutch driven/friction plate and/or spigot bearing. Moderators PB260Z Posted February 13, 2017 Moderators Share Posted February 13, 2017 Hi, As Lurch said, process of elimination. Insofar as the bearing carriervis concerned, there are plenty of different carriers, have a look at this thread. http://www.viczcar.com/forum/topic/14705-thrust-bearing-carriers/ Cheers PB
OZ001
After 2 nights and some actual sleep. I found out my mate manage to squeeze the spigot bush onto the fly wheel thinking it was like other fly wheels and spigot bearings. Thanks for your help guys. With bearing carriers, what are the symptoms when putting in the wrong one?
Moderators PB260Z Posted February 13, 2017 Moderators Share Posted February 13, 2017 (edited) Hi Assuming the box bolts up, the problem would be the clutch action. If the carrier is to long, the clutch will not engage, or not fully engage To short and it won't disengage, or not fully disengage. Cheers PB Edited February 13, 2017 by PB260Z
C.A.R.
Perhaps you could insert the spigot bearing into your mate, so he knows what it's like to have one inserted incorrectly?RE Bearing carrier: you'll either have:Clutch is engaged all the time - carrier is too long. Clutch does not engage - carrier is too short. Clutch engages at the very top of the pedal travel - carrier is too long. Clutch engages at the very bottom of the pedal travel - carrier is too short. Clutch engages, but slips at either end of pedal travel - carrier is either to short or to long. If the process of performing a Auto to Manual conversion has proven 'challenging' for you - which it obviously has - I suggest you take it to a qualified mechanic to perform the work. For the sake of yourself & others on the road.... Edited February 13, 2017 by Lurch ™ scott and PB260Z
Andrew_L26
I wouldn't worry about it too much, if it all bolts together and the clutch fully engages and disengages at the correct pedal height you should be fine. I was lucky enough to get my carrier, flywheel and clutch all in a package (replaced the clutch and machined the flywheel but it was still a matching set).
