Hi there. I am new to the Z car scene, to the car scene in general really. A 240z caught my eye though and it was love at first sight. Now it has become my new obsession.

What I wanted to ask was, are these listings legitimate? The price disparity alone makes me nervous. I know all of these examples have non OEM parts, and probably lack anything close to matching numbers. But is that alone enough for the premium?

Those websites look like aggregators that often don't update listings when sold. Sometimes the listings are a few years old.

Be warned the cheap stuff in the US is cheap for a reason. Lots of bad previous repairs that don't show up in photos.

Local offerings are expensive but by the time you've converted to $AUD, paid for import costs and converted to RHD (don't have to do this) then local cars are not bad buying, especially given the fact that RHD cars are very rare compared with LHD.

This is good advice. Here in the UK we've seen quite a few of the recently imported lower-end-of-the-market USA cars turning out to have dodgy repairs to historic crash damage, and even cut-and-shuts and switched identities. Not good.

I looked at importing a couple of early Z's a few years ago, but uncovered quite a few issues with them before I went ahead.

Then when I was in the US of A I saw a number of cheap examples in person. Put me off the idea of buying a car sight unseen (lots in California were as bad as anywhere else).

If you can't see it in person or don't have an experienced person to view on your behalf it's a bit gamble with the odds against you.

Then add in the problems with importing here, asbestos checks, quarantine, shipping costs and import duties, you're $7k car has cost you $25k by the time it's here and often it's worse than a rusty local car. Plus behind LHD it's resale value is somewhat diminished.

I've seen a few of these bad examples show up on eBay here etc.. needing lots of work to be viable.

If you want to go down the "cheap" route, a late model 280z with fuel injection might be worth a punt. Just remove the god awful US spec bumpers and back date the look to more early S30Z. But even then same risks apply.

This Series 1 240Z was one of the earliest produced, having been manufactured in November of 1969 and sold to its orginal owner in Arizona as a 1970 model.

I bought this early Series 1 240Z in 2009 from the brother of the original owner, who had it in storage for 20 years.   It was an AZ car, so did not suffer the plight of most Zs --- rust.   My plans were to restore it, although I've been busy restoring other vehicles and this one has been under a cover for an additional 11+ years awaiting restoration.  It deserves to be restored to original condition and enjoyed by somebody.  I drove it a few times when I first bought it, but parked it for restoration and removed the battery to avoid corrosion issues in that common area.  

Z-enthuriasts will note that this car (#491) came down the assembly line right in front of what would become John Morton's BRE racecar, #492.  (That is about the only way to 'lead' John Morton's car.)

While on the subject of VIN, this car had its dashboard ID tag stolen a long time ago, and the State of Arizona therefore issued a duplicate -- which they placed below the original and correct VIN tag inside the driver's door.  It also retains the original and correct VIN tag in the engine bay.  Lastly, the very early cars were also marked with the VIN in a semi-scripted style on the front of the cowl in the engine bay, and the condition of the original paint in this area makes it easy to read.  (See pics)

The original owner changed the color of the car in 1982 to an off-white....with pinstripes. (sigh) The original exterior color was 'Univeral' Dark Blue (Color Code 903), and the interior was black.   Evidence of the original color is readily found on the back sides of panels, fenders, under the hatch and hood, and of course in the back deck area.   I bought the vehicle because it had the best body and frame condition I had ever seen on an unrestored early Z car.  The common rust-prone areas on this car appear to be in remarkable shape:  The 'doglegs', the rear wheel arches, the hatch panel, the battery tray, etc.    The driver's side floor did have a ~4in x 2in rusted out hole around a failed rubber plug, so I welded in a new floor panel from a well-known supplier.   About the only other area with notable rust is the very bottom sections of the front fenders, which are much more easily fixed than unibody areas.  

The car was never undercoated, so it is easy to inspect conditions on the bottom of the car, which reveal the original blue paint and some surface rust only.   I've included as many pictures as permitted and tried to emphasize the unibody conditions in the critical areas under the car.  The body panels themselves are remarkably straight and essentially ding-free, though the white exterior color makes it difficult to capture in pictures.  Likewise, the bumpers and side view mirror are in exceptional condition, with only minor rust on the inside (back) of the bumpers.  Even the back bumper over-rider bar is straight.  The rear quarter panel '240-Z' emblems are the original metal type. 

The doors are in good shape and both windows go up and down but need attention.  Each door has a cut-out where a speaker had once been installed.  The interior carpets, plastic panels, seats, and related items were all cracked or dried out beyond repair and were discarded in favor of planned replacement with parts to be sourced from a reputable Z restoration parts company.   The dash naturally has longitudinal cracks above each of the gauges.   The car retains its original Series 1 style (solid spokes) steering wheel and console. 

This car has its orginal spare tire (Bridgestone Super Speed Radial 20) in near-original condition.  The tire has no date code, as it predates the 1971 regulations which later required the use of such codes.   The spare is marked "DOT" and "Made In Japan" and the wheel is date-stamped "TOPY 11-69". 

The engine is not the original engine, as it is an L28 (#298608) with an N42 head on it, although it retains the side-draft carburetors.   The engine bay has been (ineffectively) sprayed in black, as is often done when owners change the car's original color.  The original blue is easily seen where the black has not adhered. 

Some spare parts including a brand new alternator and fuse box will be included in the sale, as will written materials such as wiring diagrams, repair procedures, etc. 

I am going to advertise the car locally as well, so if the right person comes along, I may halt the auction early.  Anyone wishing to inspect the car in person is open to coordinate a visit to do so.  The car is in Bucks County, outside Philadelphia.   I may be reached at area code 917 number 855-9141 to coordinate physical inspection or answer questions.  Prospective foreign buyers must go through a domestic agent.  My motivation to sell is only proportional to a buyer's willingness to restore rather than resto-mod this car.

Looks pretty sound. I guess prices are creeping up in NZ too as they are here. Registered, and WOF - which stands for "Warrant of Fitness" and equates to a 'roadworthy' in Australia. A car must have a new WOF every 6 months and can't have registration transferred or renewed without one. The rules are more onerous than here in Qld.

The only thing that looks wrong to me are the mirrors. All the NZ 260Zs I've seen that still had factory wing mirrors they were much more rounded in shape than those and also chrome not black.

But looks nice, in that colour I'd be proud to own it.
