74zzz
is this it? not sure model of hilux they came off http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Front-Disc-Brake-Caliper-Piston-Repair-Kit-Hilux-LN106-LN107-LN111-1988-1999-4x4-/261942149422?_trksid=p2141725.m3641.l6368
Scoota G
That's not the one. That kit has pistons all the same size, S12+8 Calipers have one large piston and a smaller piston.
GongZ
What Scoota said + the eBay listing says that they are for a 1988-1999 Hilux. (S12W calipers) I believe that you need the kit for a 1979-1985 Hilux (S12+8 solid rotor) Most of this info is from this page (from USA so add salt); http://driven-daily.com/s30-toyota-brake-upgrades/ Note that this page mentions that the 1986-1988 Hilux also had S12+8 calipers, but they were a different version to suit vented rotors. It looks like the basic castings and pistons were the same as the earlier model, so the repair kit might be the same as the 1979-1985 kit. This eBay listing from a seller called 'car-egg' might be an example of what you need; http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Disc-Brake-Caliper-Repair-Rebuild-Kit-Toyota-Landcruiser-Hilux-4WD-1978-1990-/131287632674?hash=item1e915a4b22 They have a phone number shown (02 8809 8136 Mon-Fri 11am-7pm) so it might be worth a call. If they are not helpful, I would try a specialist 4X4 parts supplier, or a (pardon my language) Toyota dealer. I am interested to see what you end up with because I have a pair of reconditioned S12+8's to add to my car - so I might need a similar kit one day. 74zzz
Hmm the issue of not being the owner who did the swap:) you mention solid discs? I currently run slotted vented and cross drilled rotors? could this mean the calipers have been machined to fit these rotors? thanks for your help! 74zzz
wonder what the logic was of having different sized pistons.........

Agno
I can confirm that the vented rotor type S12+8 calipers are exactly the same as the non-vented type and are only machined for additional width. I also have a seal kit for S12+8 calipers sitting on my desk doing nothing if someone wants a cheap kit.
GongZ
74zzz - Looking at your photos - you have slotted and drilled solid rotors - but they are not vented. The caliper is also missing an anti-squeal spring (or two? - see the first picture attached). Vented rotors look like the second picture attached (Note - this is just a random 5 stud vented rotor). As you can see, they are like two rotors with a slot between them to allow the air to help keep the rotor cool. Agno - can you please tell us the make and part number for the S12+8 seal kit? 74zzz
Yeah thought I posted a msg once I got home saying they weren't vented☺ could have sworn they were. Only seen them for the last 10 years.... Thanks for the advice and observations all
74zzz
Pardon my ignorance but how does the spring prevent squealing and is it necessary? I haven't noticed any noise since I've owned the car...... do they ensure there is pressure against the pads forcing them away from rotor to stop them rubbing? GongZ
It seems that they are actually anti-rattle springs. The remanufactured (Centric) calipers that I bought a few years ago (yet to be fitted) only came with one spring for each caliper. As to whether you need them or not, I suppose the fact that you have not noticed any issues in the last 10 years is proof that they are not entirely necessary. I did find this statement however; http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?2917970-Do-I-need-the-anti-rattle-springs-in-my-front-brakes without the springs aka anti-rattle clips your brakes will rattle a lot over bumps. i dont have them and i wish i did because it sounds like my car is going to fall apart when i drive over bumps. listen when you drive on a bumpy road...you'll hear it. it'll go away when you apply brakes. not sure where to get the clips but considering the car came with them from the factory, putting em in might not be a bad idea. 74zzz
given that they are only a few bucks and designed to have them, I get replacements
74zzz
sorry to keep this thread going but anyone have the model hilux or landcrusier these came off? struggling to find something to tell on google:) all the ebay sales for the rebuild kit specify hilux model rather than the part number stamped into the caliper. GongZ
Did you not see these posts from Agno on page 1 of this topic?; I can confirm that the vented rotor type S12+8 calipers are exactly the same as the non-vented type and are only machined for additional width. I also have a seal kit for S12+8 calipers sitting on my desk doing nothing if someone wants a cheap kit. JPS (Japan Brake System Co.) part number 04479-30031NG I searched for 04479-30031 (with the "include description" option selected) on eBay (Australia) and got 22 results. This was the cheapest including postage at $26.95; http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Disc-Brake-Caliper-Kit-Landcruiser-BJ42-FJ40-FJ45-HJ45-HJ47-40-Series-1980-1984-/400581455925?hash=item5d4483f035 Or you could take up Agno's kind offer. dat2kman
Take the calipers down to Niel Barker at Custom Brakes & Automotive, Ellen St Moorooka. Ask him if he can sort you out. If not, ask him for Phil Topfer's business and address ( Salisbury somewhere?) Phill will definately be able to supply everything. ( if I was at home atm, i'd post up Phils details from his business card, but not home for 2 more weeks!) Or can you wait a bit?

hmd
You need to use one of these spanner http://www.totaltools.com.au/sidchrome-spanner-set-scmt21257/i1028852/#.Vcq7IvmqpBc Designed for soft metal flare nuts. Wraparound design prevents disortion of soft metal corners. Provides additional torque without spreading
