Jeff's 240z build

How time gets away from you when you are having fun or just done have enough of it (time)

Its been over a month since I have had time to sit at a computer and post an update on the progress with the Z car.

So here we go.

I posted this quote earlier but as I move through this build I am beginning to appreciate it more and more and understand its true meaning........

 "One of the eternal truths of automotive restorations is that inherited problems from previous restorers are always worse than problems that occur naturally".

Over the Bathurst weekend I managed to strip the windscreen out of the car, remove the roof lining, strip the paint off the roof, continue to carry out the RH quarter repairs and tinker with all manner of things.

One of the above mentioned man made problems was my cowl panel. it had been well and truly tampered with to the point I decided I needed a new one. After stumbling across a cowl panel in what looked like very good condition (and it turned out to be just that) on gum tree I purchased it and I am very happy with this.

It has now been soda blasted along with both guards and the headlight cones. The Soda blasting has also confirmed what I thought was the case with a few more man made problems when rust was repaired at the bottom of both guards. I though this was the case as when removing the guards I found that they had been welded, yes welded at the bottom as the bolts were rusted away.

One of the items I found during the stripping of the turret was that some of the lead needs rectification. So today I picked up some flux and a few sticks of lead to hopefully sort these sections over the weekend. Im also going to need to use a bit of lead to finish off the rear quarter repairs,.

Progress is also being made on several founts in Warragul and LCR.

The Diff is having a KAZZ LSD centre fitted and should be all completed so I can pick it up in a few weeks when I am in the Gippsland region.

The L24 I sent down about 6 weeks ago looks like its coming back as an over 3L.............I'm still coming to grips with the 29% increase in capacity and what that will translate into but Les said it will be good :).

The boys are also working on a new exhaust and some other additions for the car.

Well I am certinatly looking forward to my trip to Warragul in a few weeks. This should be further advanced. That crank only just fits into that block. Only problem is I will need to get going with the bits I am working on or my shed is going to be full of components ready for action but with no home go to.

I think I need few big days in the shed.

Jeff.

Haha. I discovered today that my build has made it to the Facebook thingo watset. https://m.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1720088031558972&id=1679339722300470&set=a.1720088004892308.1073741837.1679339722300470&source=48&refid=13&_ft_=tl_objid.1725824137652028

Classic.

Guessing it's Lurch's handy work?

I am working near Warragul this week so I made the pilgrimage to LCR this afternoon. It was great to meet Les have a Cook's tour chat about my engine build and talk about physics with Les.

Les seemed quite excited about the prospect of building a (as I'm calling it) 3.1 from an original L24 block. I'm just looking forward to its performance once it's in the car :-).

I took a couple of photos of a few things.

Yeah a 3.1ltr from a L24 block is awesome, what crank are you using? LD28? Or RB30? or is it the L28 crank?

I am going with a similar idea for my Safari Gold car, L24 block with E31 head (re-welded chambers), not sure I'll go stroker yet. Keeping mine on a tight budget.

Les said the crank starts life as an RB crank then gets modified with the journals reduced and off set ground to increase the stroke. Or something like that. Honda I beam rods and LCR pistons should be nice when it's together.

It will be 85.5 bore 89 mm stroke makes it just over 3 ltrs.

Around 300 BHP at 6500 with 260 ft lbs from about 3500.

Coupled with EFI it should be a good driver.

I was in the workshop today for a few hours investigating a compressor failur. When I was done I had time left to spend working on the 240. It was great. I felt like doing some fitting work so I started to re assemble the right rear strut. Fitted the bearings stub axle and breaks. Always great to get the time to just potter.

On the engine front I can share a few figures of what's in production at LCR. Les also sent through a couple of photos today of the Pistons and one of the block pre machining.

Block original L24

Bore = 85.5 mm

Stroke = 89 mm

Capacity = 3066 cc (call it 3.1l)

Compression = 10.57:1

Head original E88

Inlet valve = 44 mm

Exhaust valve = 35 mm

Chamber = 50 cc

I think it should go ok. Might just be a wolf in sheeps clothing?

Your sticking with the drums?!

Old school. It's not going to be a race car.

Maybe later it will change but getting through rego first time around will be much simpler with it std. I do live in a burocratic strong hold.

Spent some of the day in the shed. Man it was hot here today. Our garage is under the house so it stays nice and cool. It was a retreat today.

Spent time sandblasting small components and painting them plus some assembly work. Finished off the RH rear upright. Quite happy with it. Not sure what I will do tomorrow just to many things to do........

More progress today.

Three of the four struts are re assembled and ready for installation one day when the body is finished. Forth one I is on the bench so should get it done this week.

The colection of finished components is growing larger at the back of the shed. And the bonus is that all this has feed up some shelf space.

Lucky Les and the boys are working while I'm on holidays. Les sent me some photos today of progress on two fronts.

LCR have manufactured an efi wiring harnes to go with the motec that will run the EFI hardware throttle bodies. Les has also arranged for a radiator to be manufactured to keep the power plant cool. With increased power output will come an increase in heat generated by the engine so it's important to get that heat energy out of the system (that's physics).

I was showing one of my Japanese friends some of the photos of my build, to say he was impressed by the work that eminats from the LCR work shop is an understatement. When you consider who Yoda san does work for and the quality of his work it's high praise indeed. Big thumbs up.

I am looking forward to getting back to the rust and body repairs when I get home.

Firstly apologies, I have been letting the serious stuff get in the way of the enjoyable things in life and neglecting both the 240Z and the forum. Spare time has been very short over that last 6 to 8 weeks so progress has been quite slow for me, but luckily the day job is entering a lull and I should be able to get back to the shed and the shell in the next few weeks. Also on a positive note Les and the Boys at LCR have been forging ahead. I have been told that my L24 build has again made the front page of the LCR facebook site. I must say I got a bit excited when I saw some of the photos ;D  ;D .

Les also sent through a few photos of the EFI wiring harness they have built for the motor.

I have managed to spend a bit of time working on the Z in the last few days.

I have finally made the decision the car needs to go onto a rotisserie to make life easier and get a better result. So the old L26 has been pulled out and front and rear frames to mount it to the rotisserie have been fabricated and are ready to go. I also removed a few other items including the battery support.

It's feeling good to be back in the shed. Rocky is also enjoying having me around a bit more as he gets to mooch around the shed.
