They say a Leopard can't change it's spots.

Perhaps he's trying to disassociate his new business name from the old Edward Lees name which has taken a beating over the last 2 years.

Might be time to do a new Search Engine Optimised page for Sun Rise Cars or Rising Sun or whatever the new name is.. ;).

Just a heads up from J-Spec Imports as it would appear our good friend is trading again under yet another new name which is Sunrise Cars (http://www.sunrisecars.com.au).

"A quick heads up to everyone, be weary as Edward Lees is currently rebranding themselves after all the negative publicity about their recent raids by the Dept of Fair Trading. This is after they just rebranded themselves a few months ago due to declaring themselves insolvent

They are now setting themselves up as Sunrise Cars (www.sunrisecars. com.au) but it still run by the same people, so beware! A quick Google of "Edward Lees problems" will bring people up to speed who don't know what I'm talking about".

I drove past there yesterday and it still has the Edward Lees imports placards up, the herd was looking a bit thinner than usual too! I'm sure it will be business as usual soon enough though.

Leopards can't change their spots. But some try...

Quote

Well. This RX-7 is BACK for sale after lying low for 3 months... As always, our point is that sellers have a vested interest in the details they present so you will seldom see the full story. Many dealers try to circumvent their legal obligations by selling privately. An independent background check is inexpensive and quick and will help in your decision to inspect or purchase. This can save you from purchasing a lemon and wasting your money, time and effort, OR help you to negotiate a better price if you still decide to proceed once you know the facts.

CONSUMER WARNING - 2002 Mazda RX-7. VIN: FD3S-603671. Currently for sale "privately".

New ad: https://www.carsales.com.au/…/2002-Mazda-RX…/SSE-AD-5922946…

This time the seller says: "The time has come to sell so I am regretfully letting this go to someone who knows and appreciates the responsibility of this mighty Japanese hero." and "...it’s a relief knowing that the car is in good shape."

Remembering that just 3 months ago the seller claimed: "...condition is excellent..." and "I am selling this is due to moving overseas for some unexpected work commitments."

So, what does the Japanese history tell us ?

On Jan 27, 2018 this vehicle was auctioned in Japan with R (repaired) grade. Auction report stated: Front accident history car. Seats worn. Side bolsters soft. XX (panels replaced) – left baffle, left front inner panel, front cross member, left front side member. Interior dirty and worn. W3 (wavy / repainted) to right rear quarter panel.

From there it was exported to Australia and showed up on the SEVS compliance record in NSW on 10 April 2018 where it was inspected and PASSED by GOLEE Pty Ltd. Noting that Australia has stringent requirements on failing any vehicle which has had "more than 25mm damage or repair to a structural component", and based on these criteria and the fact that key structural components are listed as having been entirely replaced in Japan, the vehicle should certainly have failed this inspection.

This company is operated by Mr. Philip Lee of Edward Lee's Imports, which is subject to a NSW Fair Trading warning from 22 February 2016 "After a lengthy, joint investigation by NSW Fair Trading involving NSW Police and a number of other agencies" in relation to odometer tampering of imported vehicles: https://www.finance.nsw.gov.au/…/public-warning-imported-us…

Don't waste money on useless checks within your country for Japanese imports - if the vehicle was in Japan most of its life then your country has no information ! It costs only 40 USD to check the Japan auction records back to 2007: http://japancarhistorycheck.com/check-your-car-now

Interestingly the car was removed from sale yesterday, right after this information was posted to a few Facebook groups. Probably because fair trading is keeping a keen eye on Mr Lee's.

As an FYI, I don't think Grade R cars are necessarily bad cars. A car can be considered Grade R and only have had cosmetic (non structural damage) on Japanese Auction Sheets. However this car was likely to have sold at a significant discount at auction as a result of it's Grade R status. It has clearly been through the compliance process here (and via Mr Lee's on shop) which I doubt would have gone over it with a fine tooth comb for problems and is now being passed on as a "mint" example.

If the car was a mint grade 4.5 car (as it's been presented) it likely would get $50k AUD at auction in Japan.

Interestingly if you drive along Parramatta Rd, you could see various car dealerships. Which appear to all be owned by the same operator. Edward Lee's has been rebranded, and looks like a new business, but it's literally the same company and the yards next door the same also. You would think you're going to a competitor, but in actual fact they have the same operator behind them.

Every time they slip up I'll keep posting it here. :)

Apparently Sold! and the video has been taken off youtube. I had a quick read, ad saying no rust. But JOC says some panel damage & chassis rust

Phil claimed in the video the car was immaculate and he didn't need to do anything to it as it was in pristine condition. He did a full walk around showing how collector status it was.. probably why he removed it. Too incriminating.

Jeez. Glad I read this thread, I nearly got in touch with them about this one! https://www.edwardlees.com.au/stocklist/datsun-make/260z-model/pagenum-1/

Although he is clearly dodgy that looks like a nice car and at the price could be worth a serious look. Obviously requires buyers caution.

Even dodgy dealers sometimes have nice cars on the lot. Use a high degree of caution and don't believe anything he promises you. Any kind of warranty is unlikely to be honoured.

I actually asked the bloke with the Stagea what happened in the end. Since I also own a Stagea and it's a small community I managed to get in touch.

He told me Phil wiggled out of paying anything but he was compensated via some dealer / motor authority org. And now that values have gone up it's kind of water under the bridge now. Since the 260rs have increased in value a lot since then. So in effect once he got compensated the car only cost him $10k odd. Now they are selling for high $30k low $40k range.

It’s actually... annoyingly appealing, haha. I was looking into the 240Z in Canberra, but this one despite being a 260Z seems to have more going for it. I’m not desperate to have an early car, I just want a clean S30.

Any other reasons I should steer clear?

Mike, as a part of my business I also offer vehicle inspections.
If you want to look at that Z in Sydney, shoot me a text.

Would love to be a fly on the wall if this ever happened. Might be a reality TV show in it. ;D
Think I would even pay to watch.
