The cars sold at his yard seem to get a bad wrap on the Japanese odometer check page and various forums for being wound back. But unfortunately I think that is the norm and not the exception with these importers =( I think he is just an easy target due to the high presence on youtube and what not. Any so called "rebuilt hogh HP engine" etc from there would need to be verified, and that could get pricey to do so, and if found out to be bullsh1t after you bought it??? Not to mention the obvious tax dodging going on at Edward Lee's with the orange 240z that's been for sale forever. As a tax payer (and a high paying 1 at that) it pisses me off no end that people like them can cheat the system. I hate A Current Affair, but at least it highlighted the shonky dealings of these guys. If you're going to buy a Japanese Import or any import get it odometer checked and if you're buying a vintage classic Japanese car make sure you check it over very closely as we know how they rust and who knows what kind of repair work has been done on Edward Lee's inventory. Recently two cars have sold at around $50k, their owners have mostly carefully added up their build bills, and were in the $70-90,000 area. We flinch at 432Z pricing, or KPCG10 pricing, but there are, just a few, that will pay for these cars, done properly. A fully setup proper decent resto shop,,, how many cars per month does it need to turnover in order to sustain its business mdel? Wages, verheads, cost f goods, government red te. Why arent people flcking to the doors of Les Collins, or Stew Wilkins? Money, or the short arm, deep picket syndrome. A Sydney workshop has to fork out $60,000 in advance to get 10 close ratio dogbox internals made, at a time, minimum order. 9 get sold o/seas, one got so D here, in four years, but that $60k cost f goods had to come from somewhere, and money costs money! I have mentioned this before - educated guess - I would say this is a "tax dodge". I reckon the two Zeds he continues to advertise "for sale" are his personal cars. If he advertises them and "never" sells them - he can claim the stock as a loss on his business books. That's why when people ask if it is for sale - his staff say "kind of" - 'cause they do not know if the question is coming from an undercover tax inspector OR a genuine enquiry. Essentially he gets to own the cars while his business slowly pays for them via the loss adjustment. Cars will eventually pay for themselves and will be written off as "unsellable stock". Not a very honest way to be going about things. Possibly a reflection how he manages the rest of his business? Dunno. While I can't blame a guy for wanting to get back at the taxman - doing it this way would be confusing a lot of potential Z car owners - which ain't so cool. Would laugh if someone comes up with cash and goes the "buy it now" option on ebay. He will be legally obligated to sell! Just guessing mind you..... From JOC Facebook page. UNSCRUPULOUS DEALER of the month! A family with a disabled son was looking for a van converted for a wheelchair. They paid the dealer $1000 to source a Nissan Elgrand in Japan. The dealer not only happily takes the 1k 'sourcing fee', but he later presents them with a vehicle that was already landed/in stock ...with wound back kms! Luckily the family did contact us and ordered a JOC check. The car was advertised with 38'127kms on the odometer, but the registration documents provided by us proved that it had already done over 120'000kms last year before it was exported. (see pics) This is what the family wrote to us: 'Dear JOC We checked the odometer reading you sent against the advertised odometer. XXXX says the odometer reading is 38,000 – whereas the results you sent us say 121,200 (about 3 x more than what they told us). We approached the dealer (XXXXX) and were told that ‘it’s those people in Japan who are winding back the clocks’. We had paid $1,000 for this company to find us a wheel chair converted vehicle in Japan so we can transport our young son with cerebral palsy. The only thing they did was to try to sell us this vehicle they already in Sydney. Families like us struggle to find vehicles and are at risk of exploitation. We’re glad we did our research and found you but some other desperate family will get caught. Meanwhile – XXXXX promised we would get our $1,000 back but this has not happened. Hope you can do something proactive to ensure this vehicle is advertised at its correct odometer (not only is this fraud – but people may have a false sense of security about the safety and reliability of their vehicle.
