My name is cooper im from Adelaide im 16 turning 17 in September meaning i get my P's! I have always loved the Datsun Z range but im wondering if it would be good for a first car? Would insurance cost alot?

I found a datsun 260z 2+2 for $4200 negotiable and it looks real nice, i dont think ill be able to get it but im sure another one will pop up later. Heres the link:

It was my first car when I got my licence! Bought a 260Z 2 seater. Had others but never drove them as they were "projects" that were never finished. Never regretted it.

Teaches you alot about maintenance and everything else. Go for it.

If you still up for it go ahead. Lot of guys here started out in a z as first car so dont see an issue.

Do be wary of rust though, what the seller says it has, and what it actually has, are two different stories...

I very nearly bought a 260 2+2 as my first car. Ended up with a Silvia roughly same price, but Z would have been great fun too.

I suggest you try drag along a forum member here, or at least post the link up in this thread before you go look at one to buy. Might save you a lot of money in future!

Car insurance websites should do a free quote estimate for you... Can't imagine it'd be ridiculously expensive

ok well ill see how i go, really want to get a manual one but they seem to be pretty hard to find for a cheaper price in running order. Well at least my dads a mechanic....... well he was when he was younger but he now drives concrete trucks but he should be able to help with some things!

Simple answer? Yes.

Looking at the overall delivery numbers, there were a lot of 2+2 models, then a lot of 240z models, then a a few 260z models delivered.

BUT! The 240z are more desirable (why? I personally couldn't tell you) so they fetch more and are more 'common' to see.

Someone posted up the australian delivery numbers of each model once. I looked for it but i cant find it.

i think they are a bit past it for daily duties. They can "do it" as such if required though. My first car was my 260z 2 seat (in adelaide) when i was 16 in 1996. i still have it. its shedded and goes out from time to time.

Thing is to be wary of - they are a bit of a target.  Mine was vandalised a few times - even in the nicest of areas (even more so). Similarly mates with 1600's.

This is why i no longer drive it as an everyday car. nothing worse than going to dinner in the city or something and feeling nervous about walking away from your car.

Yes get a 2+2, you can get them cheap like 5 grand for a decent one. Don't spend a dime on improving it. Just general maintenance. Start saving money. When you are older and have a job and can spend more coin, get a 2 seater and do it up nice.

Not a great move looking at a 30yr old + as your first car.

A second first car maybe but not a first primary car.

True but i was never really wanted a modern car most of the cars i like are old and personally i think back then they were built to last unlike the cars we have now and i cant contemplate of buying a car i don't fancy and fix and do all that stuff because it wouldn't be fun and would end up getting sold real quick hahah, but that's my point of view. :)

That is a good point but i can imagine it would be like that for most cars that people own either way what happens happens there isn't much you can do about :/ I try not to think about all the things that can happen because then you stress out and what not.

That is what the plan was, you read my mind!

I had a 260z 2+2 as my first car, it was my daily driver for almost 4 years I loved every minute of it, if you have a job and are willing to constantly have know money due to maintenance the buy one but if you don't I prob would not recommend it.

they are quite reliable cars if you change the oil every 5k km, also have someone who knows about them tune the carbs and adjust all the valves etc. I purchased a whole bush kit from the USA and it was the best thing I done to mine. after all that is done its just a matter of keeping them clean and checking for any sort of rust, the sooner you get to it the less painful it is in the end. last but the most important do your brakes, change the fluid, pads etc, get a good set of tyres as 260z 2+2 have a tendency of going sideways in the wet
