My new car arrived last night! I couldn't be more happy with it! The body and interior are perfect and it handles like a go kart but with a ridiculous, monstrous, snarling engine under the hood. It's so silly and so awesome. Getting the RWC done today.

First things on the list should be get rid of those mirrors, change the mags and lower it and inch or two  ;)

Awesome ride mate

Went to the mechanic and as I suspected, the first thing I need to do is replace the 260Z carbs! I'm already on the hunt for a stereo, mirrors, an air dam and wheels though.

Yeah, I'm sure that if he really wanted to he could get them working if he was determined to but the PO owner had plenty of people look at them and get nowhere too.

I don't know what would be best for me though in terms of price vs. performance vs. reliability. I need to do some reading I guess.

It really comes down to personal preference and what you value in a zed. Is it a Daily Driver or Weekend Warrior??

So talking to the PO, it's apparently got 260Z carbs and head on a L28 block bored out to 2960l with high pistons and a 1440 hybrid cam. I don't even know if I heard all of that correctly or what half of it means... but anyway.

He reckons he spent a fortune sourcing the original 260Z carbs so that he could keep it original but he only ever had a shot at tuning them himself and a professional has never had a crack. Is it really worth switching to the 240Z carbs and are the carbs I have as bad as people say?

I am basically looking for the best trade off between price, performance and reliability. It's not a track car and not a daily driver but I still want it to run well. Unfortunately I'm not educated enough to make good decisions.

take it to a Zed specialist and get them to have a look at it. You have a couple of good workshops down in Mexico that will know what's going on.

They should tell you whether they need a quick tune or more work on them to get them up to scratch. From there you can make the choice as to whether to look at rebuilding your carbies, getting a replacement set of standard types (240 or 260) or stepping up to triples or making the jump to EFI.

From the sounds of it, if he has had them rebuilt to suit that motor then it could be a quick refurb and a tune by someone who knows what they are doing with them. Unfortunately there aren't too many mechanics who like playing with 40 year old motors anymore so when you find one you tend to keep them.

In my ccase I have 3 different workshops that work on my cars, one for my Charger, as they know the old 265 backwards and can get it to work very well, one for the hairdressers car, beacause they are the best workshop in Brisbane for these cars hanns downto complete the services I can't do at home and the third workshop for the race car because he knows the motors I am playing with and will set up the car to suit what i want and his work is to the standard i demand without asking.

Thanks for the input. I'm taking it to Daniel at DJM this week and we are going to sit down and have a look at what we can do with it. He is thinking stainless steel extractors and a 2" exhaust with the 240Z carbs.

My 1st 260Z had Hitachi carbs, no pollution stuff other than the carbon cannister bowl.

I never had a problem with the Hitachi's yet everyone canned them.

I think those carbs have minimum adjustment but provided it is running a little on the rich side you are better off than too lean.

The biggest improvement is electronic ignition which I think your car already has.

Don't fix whats not broken unless you have poor performance and/or poor economy??

I have another 260Z 77' now which had all the pollution stuff and carbon cannister bowl and Hitachi's also, once again never gave me a problem until just recently and I replaced with 240Z carbies, plus a 2.25 exhaust & extractors, but the problem was actually the fuel pump, so did all that work unnessarily but the real change after the modifications was way better fuel economy & a nice exhaust note once the exhaust system has run in but I think performance change is minimal the car is bascially stock standard. lynton 8)

PS: You need a fusible link plastic cover to finish off the engine bay.........congratulations a nice find that 260Z

Is it rude to ask what you paid for it? Looks good mate

Drop it, new rims and itll be cool

I ended up paying 16K. Really happy with that though as the PO spent 32K on it to get it to that point. Aside from the carb issues, I can't fault a single thing on the car.
