EBC Green Stuff

Recommended Posts

Hi there.

I'm going slotted (but standard size) rotors for my 240Z and I wanted a better / performance brake pads. One brake shop mentioned EBC green stuff .. and I went and had a look at the description on the web. They do look good, but for a hot 240Z do I go green or red stuff ???

anyone had experience with better brand / performance front brake pads on standard calipers? what is the right choice?

Cheers

Hey Adam,

I have used them on a couple of cars now and love them for a street car. On my zed however, I've found that as I do more longer track work, the green's just couldn't keep up with the heat after 4 or 5 flying laps and I now run red on the rear and race pads on the front. For sprints, hillclimbs and on the street however, I would and do reccomend them.

Red are also good but don't work 100% when cold, which makes them not very suitable for a car that spends most of it's time on the road.

My old man runs EBC Greens in his Austin Healey - he likes them & they perform quite well for a car that is used for weekend 'spirited driving' & the odd punt around the track. They work very well from cold.

I personally run Ferodo DS2500's (or DS3000's when it's seeing some heavy track work) on the Zed (stock std. 240Z brakes setup).

The 2500's are fantastic. They stop from cold, but they emit a slight squeal when they are warm - cold & hot are silent however. Stuff-all dust too.

Just depends on what you prefer Adam - your uses & driving style...

Thanks Guys ..

Lurch, does your stock set-up have slotted rotors? I have heard from several owners of cars with slotted rotors that the slotting actually helps to cut out the noise on racing pads, as under normal use the different pad material in racing pads tends to glaze up. The slotting has the effect of cutting, or slicing this glaze off, and actually stopping (or lowering it) in the first place, as the slots get rid of the hot gasses that otherwise cause the glazing ... Not having the car set up, or having run these specialist items on my car before, its all hear say.

The other thing i'm planning on considering is the 'fade stop brake cooler' (FSBC)  that is an external heat sync that actually cols the pad, thereby helping the whole equation. By all accounts, running slotted rotors, EBC greens or Ferodo's, new brake lines, the best fluids and FSBC's the 240Z does incredibly well on tracks, especially under group SC type regs ...

Anyway, its all ahead of my now anyway

Cheers

Adam

I ran green stuff on my standard front calipers before recent brake upgrade, when I checked brakes before a track day found pad material had cracks everywhere and sections were missing  :o pads were only 50% worn. I upgraded to yellow stuff and they were ok, still had pitting of the pad material when removed from the car.... Now running Hilux fronts, R31 rears with pads from GSL Rallysport (QLD), best I've ever had!

EBC red and yellow had compound change a while ago and now work from cold. I found the EBC's to be very dusty too. I ran yellows after the compound change...

Wow Gareth, I've had the opposite experience!!

I run the GSL on the fronts and after 3 days at bathurst my whole car was a different colour!

I would say the Greens and Reds have had the best pad life, performance and minimum dust of all the brakes I've used! I probably wont use the GSL again due to dust and VERY quick wear, although a good pad otherwise, cheap too, which is where I think the EBC fall down.

BTW, I have commodore brakes and skyline rears now, hilux previously (with green's), but brakes are brakes really for a street car.

Hehe, different strokes for different folkes, maybe you don't brake hard enough  :P lol. Maybe I don't drive fast enough!  I was using standard rotors and calipers with EBC, I have brake ducting..  that (fully standard) could be a cause for my problems!

Out of interest which GSL compound did you use?    Sorry for tiny hiighjack Adam

Thanks Gents .. all good reading...

I checked out the EBC site and they state that they recently changed the compounds (maybe given this reliability issue you mention). I think they use ceramic now in the pads, and the online writing talks specifically of low dust (which might again be as a result of the dusting issues with the earlier pads).

I think i'll go green stuff, and if I need to do some more serious or prolonged track work, maybe the reds will be the go .. Agree on the price though... called up the local place to get a price and I think they are about $135 or so for a set (and thats just for the front wheels!!!!).

oh well ,,, you get what you pay for, or so the saying goes. Might also consider Lurch's Ferodo 2500 idea too... James uses these but says they started squeaking a bit after a while ... perhaps something the slotted rotors will eliminate.

Cheers again lads.

Oh yeah .. you all get a dose of Karma for being so helpful !

I'll keep an eye out for the compound on the red's now. I haven't bought pads for a while (Stockpiled) but will look out for it with the next lot.

I'll find out what compound the GSL's are Gareth and get back to you, my Dad actually picked them up

I used to run EBC yellows on the front and reds on the rear.  I found they had good feel straight up for a race pad but I would lose brakes quite quickly even with the yellows.  They also wore very quickly.  Running Project Mu pads now and they are a brilliant pad but don't work well cold.
