260Z Gearbox Ratios - what are they???

Hi all,

I'm in need of a list of 1st to 5th gear ratios for the 260Z (71b) gearbox.

Does anyone have an ACCURATE list? The ones I've found on the net have been horribly inaccurate...

I'll update the info into the "What Gearbox's Fit" thread too ;)

Slightly different to those stated in the Nissan Motor Corp 260Z Service Manual for Transmission type FS5C71B, published 1975.

1st    2.905

2nd  1.902

3rd    1.308

4th    1.000

5th    0.864

Rev  3.382

I don't know anything about it personally, just quoting the book.

I've got a tutorial to post as soon as I can find the pictures and put them on a server for fitting a 71c box and everything that is involved or not depending on the route you want to take.

What exactly do you need the ratios for? If it's for a 71c conversion I can flick you a copy of the tutorial. It's about 11mb tho, so can't post up here, I'll need to convert to text friendly version

Even though I've rebuilt a gearbox before like the rest of my mechanical knolwedge its very limited, thats where I'm confused about close ratios, I've got an early 71a gearbox which pretty much fells like its in neutral even though its in gear so I want something thats a lot closer together between gears, is this what a close ratio is or am I way off?

Not quite,

the list on the left is early 240 z 3 peice, also used in datsun Sports 2000's known as a 71A

the list in the middle is early 260z known as a 71B

the list on the right is late 260z,  some 280ZX pretty well all 240k's, early Skylines, most L20b engined bluebirds etc, it has the big gap between 2 and 3 also known as a 71B

there is a early 280zx box that has a 3.06 first, and some truck/commercial boxes have 3.59 first, this was done by altering the input drive/driven ratio gearset by a tooth or two.

The later RB type boxes are the sameratio ( except fifth gear) as the later 71B box, but with internal differences for strenght and other shizz.
