The gearbox specialist opened it up and basically told my mechanic that it has been rebuilt, just not in the rear (where the parts that are worn to bits and affecting the selector are housed). He seems to think that the selection issue will be easy to fix by just swapping over that rear section, or something to that effect. stevo_gj Posted August 13, 2008 Author Share Posted August 13, 2008 Gearbox went in on the weekend, got the car back yesterday afternoon and I have mixed emotions. :-\ I got the flywheel machined, clutch master and slave cylinders reconditioned, new flexible hose and spigot bush, gearbox oil replaced, rear main oil seal (supplied by genuine nissan for 55) replaced. Total cost of the job ended up being approximately 750 (parts and labor), added onto the cost of the dodgy gearbox that I sourced. My mechanic said it drives beautifully apart from a slight whine in the gearbox sometimes, which is caused by the person who reconditioned it doing it wrong. I drove it last night when I got home from work, I couldn't resist, and my mechanic was right. The clutch was very smooth, gears were moderately easy to find and it felt like I had envisioned, except for one thing. It whines like a 2 week old baby all the time in 5th, and varyingly in the lower gears. When I give it a little bit of speed it sounds like a blowoff valve.... in the gearbox.... Overall I will just have to learn to live with the sound as I can't afford to be changing gearboxes again... I really need my car to get to uni. I've gotta give Paul (zbitz) the rest of the 280 box back anyway... I'll probably look at buying another box next year when I have some time to work on it. Really though, it's just a little noise and the box performs quite well. Thanks for the advice everyone. If there is one thing I have learned about gearboxes its that it pays to get the work done yourself and pay a few extra bucks to be sure that the box you are buying is in good condition, rather than relying on the word of a 3rd party or seller.
