https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/coombabah/cars-vans-utes/datsun-260z/1190319218

"Selling 1976 Datsun 260z manual fully restored no rust the interior is good condition.
Fully resprayed few years ago save you a lot of $$$$ the car only need new tire and services.
Serious buyers only I will slightly negotiable on price."

It seems too cheap to be true.

OK - I now call "SCAM!"

The price has been 'amended' to $12,000.

The description has been edited to;
"Selling 1976 Datsun 260z manua L 28 engine N42 block. N42 head. Fully restored inside and outside no rust the interior is good condition fully resprayed few years ago save you a lot of $$$$ the car only need new tire and services Serious buyers only call daytime only or email."

Three new pics added too. The really interesting part is that it has a back seat! :o

$_20.PNG

The interior shot is a RHD car -

$_20.PNG

The engine bay photo is a LHD car! (corner of plastic battery tray showing)

$_20.JPG

And it doesn't look like the engine bay of a car that has been "Fully restored inside and outside".

Edit - looking at the exterior photos again - the number plates on the vehicles in the background suggest that the photos are from Japan.
I have now reported this to Gumtree as a suspected scam.

Additionally, the photo of the engine bay is someone taking a picture of a photo on a computer screen. Totally agree it looks like a pic from Japan with the kei cars in the background. I love how they fitted two seats in the back of a 2 seater.

Scam...

And.... The listings gone.

Shame really, a 2 seater with two extra seats would have been handy.. I should have contacted them and ask if it had the appropriate qld mod plate.. ;D

Seriously, that had to be the sloppiest attempt at a scam I've seen in a while... Laughable.

240z Auction

So.. I can't message this person unless I have the winning bid.... What if I want to look at it?

Also.. "originally from Canada".. Well no, maybe originally from Japan. As the steering wheel is on the wrong side. Maybe I'm just being pedantic.

I'm guessing it was a UK market car. Based on rear bumper. That same 73 240z was listed a while ago for sale. On eBay can't recall if it sold.

Buyer feedback seems suss, they often buy small items for the feedback with these scam accounts.

You are correct - it was on eBay in November last year, with an opening bid of $20,000 and a 'Buy It Now' of $33,000.
The location in that listing was Gorokan NSW, and now it's Blue Haven NSW (5 kms away) - so it could be the same seller.
Some of the same photos have been used.

NSW registration look up for ECC 111 returns.

1973 GREY DATSUN 240Z SEDAN

VIN/chassis: xxxxxxxxxxxxx0997

So I think it's HS30-100997

Funny enough I already recorded it as such in my photo albums, but not my spreadsheet.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/eV3kJoCKBfXKGqvA6

#992 was also a UK car. ("Samuri")
https://photos.app.goo.gl/vKITUoi5oEtzr3B73

Since these cars often went in batches and since this car has a UK bumper I think that makes sense to me that it's a UK market car.

Ok, UK, didn't think of that. Surely UK + Canada = lots of rust.

Yea, a bit suss on this one. Seller could simply be trying to avoid anyone seeing how bad it is.

But it's NSW registered (not on club plates) - which means annual pink slip inspections. Surely if it had critical rust, it would have run out of registration ages ago!

Currently the registration expires on 24 March 2019.

So it recently was inspected.. as to how thorough I don't know? But if a car came into a workshop looking like that, you'd want to check it over for safety items or risk losing your license to issue them!

Guy round the corner from me, just looks at my FD RX-7 and passes it, but in fairness it's super clean looking and all tyres have good tread etc..bit different to a shabby looking old Z.

Yea, but registration...... Its who you know... Not what you know ( the condition of your car to be)... Lol

Not sure it's a scam, just think seller CBF'd...

Ask him if you can go see it in storage? Say you're a serious buyer but need to inspect before bidding.

Absolutely. If you have the spare time @JDM-TOY, I'd love to know the real condition of this car.

Cheers,

Rob

If it was stolen before I sort of understand him being cagey, I've had my FD RX-7 stolen before. In fact when I went to look at it in Ireland, we met at a mutual location in a shopping center car park. If this car is registered, he should be able to drive it to meet you somewhere mutual if he's worried about people knowing where it's stored etc..

I would say that yes 240z's are rare, but they are also notorious for rust and you want to inspect it closely to see how much work the body needs before bidding because that's where all the value in these cars is..
