Greetings From Tas

It's taken me the better part of 5 years to get my act together and own a Z.

I just picked up this '73 240Z yesterday from Melbourne and drove it home to Hobart.

It's in fairly original unrestored condition, but seems to have very minimal rust and presents as a good base.

It runs the stock L24 with twin SU's, but has a few upgrades:

* 280zx electronic ignition / 280zx coil

* Fujitsubo Headers with twin exhaust system

* 280zx 5 speed, bronze shifter bushes

* R200 3.9 diff - Z31 turbo cv driveshafts - Modern Motorsport billet custom axle flanges - 260z 27 spline axles

* Willwood 4 spot front Calipers, rotor hats and discs.

* 280zx rear calipers and discs

* KYB Shocks / Eibach lowered springs

* 16x8 Wheels

It drove well, albeit a bit slow (coming off an Evo7). I'm not sure where to take it just yet - will do some research. Triples are high on the list though.

3 hour drive back to Hobart and before I went home, I took it on some twisty roads that I used to throw the EVO around.

I do like the sound of the Fujitsubo system

Those wheels do suit it, but I'm not convinced yet.

Its already jacked up with a wheel off (passenger headlight globe needs replacing). Waiting for the weekend so I can get behind the wheel and get some pics.

So the car has H4 headlights in it, but one was exceedingly dim. Globe looked ok, but replaced it anyway. No change.

Looks like I need to trace or upgrade wiring...

Hi & Welcome

A wiring and relay upgrade is well worth the effort, I would actualy say it is essential if you want to get the full potential of the H4's.

The thread below may interest you.

  • 2 weeks later...

Got the relay to upgrade the wiring for the headlights. Just not sure where to mount it.

There are two other things that need attention. The Gearbox pops out of gear when coasting - mostly in 5th. Reverse pops out unless held in while reversing. May be a simple fix, but it needs to be sorted.

The second thing requiring attention is me. Cold start. I'm an EFI guy through and through. When I bought the car, I asked and was told: full choke, no gas and no stress. BS!!! It's a pig to start cold - hoping someone can give me some friendly "welcome to carbs" advice.

I mounted mine on the RHS skirt low down near the charcoal canister.

Pics now up :)

Cheers Peter.  Typical cold wet winters day today, might get stuck into that.

Here's the worst of the visible rust - passenger side.  Previous owner says he treated it 6 years ago and it's not gotten any worse (on the outside of course).

I have new 15" wheels on order too.

Nice looking car Scott.

Great starting point. That's a typical place to find some rust, there will be some under that in the sill. Should not be to hard to fix if you decide to start on it. But possibly no rush and very possible that when you start it will soon become a bigger job than first intended.

My personal view is that these cars present better with 15" wheels. What wheels did you order? More Enkei's? I'm also curious about the drivers seat. What brand is it?

I'm going down the efi route with my car. You can have your cake and eat it. Inductuin noise of triples with drivability and cold start.

Thanks Jeff.

Car will undergo a full restoration one day, but the beauty of buying this was that I can enjoy driving it around for a few years until I'm ready.

EFI would be good, but I'm sinking my short term spending money into aesthetics (eg. wheels). The wheels I chose will upset a few people - not Enkei's.

I haven't got details on the seat - but will come back to you if I come across anything. It came with the original (vgc) drivers seat too.

Nice pickup Scott, welcome to Zed ownership.

If you want to fix the gearbox popping out of gear, go see Martin at BP Wyndhan Rd, Claremont.  He had plenty of practice fixing mine when I kept smashing them.  He fixed a couple for me that were popping out of 5th, one on power and one on overrun.

Thanks Shane - might drop in and see him.

I still have a PM from you offering to help me check out a Z from over 4 years ago. Took me a while to get my act together.

Miss seeing yours and your old man each time I drop into Baily's for work.
