Gav did any/many AU delivered cars get the rear window heater like the US cars (as in this car) did?

My car has the wiring in the loom to hook into it but obvously not the heater.

Jeff

I believe it was an option but I don't think many availed of it at the time from what I've seen. My 71 240z #1415 has a switch for it which I believe the previous owner (original owner) may have had fitted 1 at some stage but the glass has since been changed if that's the case. Like your car I see the wiring and it was sort of hooked up but appears to have been made redundant later.

I have seen the heated glass on a couple of AU market cars. EG: HS30 00868 (looks like dealer sticker still on there?)

https://photos.app.goo.gl/aRHWASiGRkCgNjLa7

However it is possible it was later retrofitted (not sold new that way) or perhaps ordered via the dealer after it was sold new by a later owner? It's difficult to say without documentation - of which we know is very rare for these cars in Australia.

Given that I've seen a few AU cars with it, I'd say it's likely they had them new but were in a minority of dealer options, it's not the sort of item I see people in the 80s/90s paying to import from the US for (given chance of breakage) and difficulty in doing so before the days of eBay and the Internet.

But really just a best guess.

Personally I love the vertical defrost glass. It's very 1960's. I also think it adds just a little extra to the look of early S30Z's - it's subtle but enough to just make the rear look a little less vacant.

Somewhat ironically early 1969 delivered S30Z's in North America had blank rear glass (like our cars) and as a result are quite sought after for those restoring early cars in North America.

Thanks Gav.

I though they may have been the case.

I’m in the process of looking at getting a reproduction rear heated glass  made. Living in Canberra it’s almost a “must have”. Heated front screens are already available and the same supplier is chasing up the rear glass. See what happens.

Somewhat ironically early 1969 delivered S30Z's in North America had blank rear glass (like our cars) and as a result are quite sought after for those restoring early cars in North America.

For "1969 delivered" read "1969 built", as no actual commercial deliveries arrived in north America until 1970.

Personally, I think it's important to understand that the heated rear glass was part of the original design, and that - for the Japanese market - it was offered in the 'Deluxe' models (so Fairlady Z-L and Fairlady Z432, then Fairlady 240Z-L and Fairlady 240ZG) and that the 'Standard' models (Fairlady Z and then Fairlady 240Z) didn't have it. It was an extra-cost option on those 'Standard' models. Much of Japan would find heated rear glass useful in winter, but if you bought a 'Standard' model and didn't pay the extra then you'd have to get out and start wiping or scraping...

With the Export models, it seems it was a case of Nissan judging whether heated rear glass was really required or not for each market (it was certainly a great help here in the UK), mixed in with whether leaving it out would save some cost. Clearly the first cars delivered to north America had a relatively rubbery pared-down spec with no carpets and no HRW (probably to help keep costs down), but this was soon rectified. This kind of thing tends to cause confusion among north American enthusiasts, some of whom appear to believe that if it wasn't on their cars then it simply didn't exist.

Did Nissan perhaps consider the whole of Australia (and NZ?) as being generally 'hot'...?

This is generally my view, in that Nissan didn't see it as necessary to begin with, but our 260z's got them!

Kind of like 240z's delivered in Australia never got the hazard switch, which is something you don't see the value in, until it's not there! However later 260z's did get them.

In Canberra, Melbourne, Hobart in winter, a heated rear screen is very useful. Sydney probably not so much. However right now Sydney feel's ice cold so it could indeed be useful here too.

I think 1 of the reasons we got the 5 speeds was because of the long drives between cities. That 5 speed would be super useful on a long drive between Sydney and Melbourne or Sydney and Brisbane.

As a side note, Australian delivered FD RX-7's got cruise control, where as most domestic market cars didn't. I think in part this is due to the fact that the price point in Australia was higher so it was necessary to add options, but also because of the local difference in roads and distances between places here.

Well my NZ-new early '74 260Z didn't get the heated rear window, although the wiring was there; yet it did get the Hazard switch; but I'd have rather had the demister in the NZ winter climate. I suspect it was left off to keep the price down, cars in NZ were expensive enough with government import taxes.

Edit: the NZ climate is the full four seasons, not unlike the southern parts of Australia. The only desert areas are alpine deserts. So we really should have got the HRW as standard. From years ago I can recall some of the NZ Z Club cars having the HRW, but which models and whether new or imports (there's a varied mix) I didn't investigate.

For my purposes I just bought a switch from MSA and one of those stick-on HRW elements, the wiring was already there. Useful fitment in the winter going to the ski fields and winter sports.

Probably need it... my 72 had straight pipes (with 2 hot dogs only) and it was white noise loud as @Lurch described it. Frightened horses in paddocks as he went past. :)

Maybe that's why the guy's face is blocked out, didn't want to be held accountable for that exhaust set up? :D

Reason I was looking at it was that I noticed a huge influx in visitors from North America to the site.

Normally the #1 visitor location is Australia. However I looked into what pages they are looking at, turns out it's the Global Z-Car Thread. Hmmm...

This particular Datsun 240z has been well taken care of by the original owner. He meticulously kept record of every maintenance item he ever preformed to the car, from day one! Including, gas, oil changes, and repairs. This particular 240z has a rich history as well as a showroom new look with less then 49,000 original miles. It is completely original and unmolested. That means this car has stayed in showroom new condition for 47 years! Meaning, it is a special part of Datsun history. With the 4 speed, this car is a blast to drive paired to the inline 6 cylinder engine and dual carburetor system. This gives it a very unique sporty feel no other cars have today!

This incredible one family owned 1978 Datsun 260Z is likely to be the most original, lowest mileage and best preserved example left in the world.

Sold new on the 18th of August 1978 to a Mr Edward Kemp from Harlow Datsun for the sum total of £6,210 including all taxes, this is shown on the cars original bill of sale which is present in the history folder. Along with this is the original service book, user manual and original Harlow Datsun tax disk holder. All tax disks have been kept from 86 to when the car was last used by Edward Kemp in 2010.

Every MOT is present while the car was on the road which supports its astonishing 15,500 miles from new. That’s right, 15,500 miles from new with every MOT certificate to support this.

The bodywork is completely original which is staggering, with only the small odd stone chip, which is what you would expect from being 40 years old. The car was never used in the rain and was heavily wax-oiled from new. This has quite literally saved the car from becoming just another rusty Datsun in a scrap yard. The underside of the car still bears its original body colour paint and looks amazing for its age. The car has never been stripped or rebuilt and holds its originality and patina. Chrome work is original and on the whole still has a nice shine.

The interior of the car makes you feel like you’re stepping into a brand new Datsun 260Z with no wear or tear on any components. Seats are presented in black vinyl with black cloth centres and black carpets which really makes for a great place to sit. Being the two seater variation, you have a large boot area. Under the rear carpet houses the cars original, and complete, tool kit and jack.

In 1991, this very 260Z featured in the Z cars owners club magazine with the title “ is this the lowest mileage 260Z?” At the time the mileage was only 9,875! This copy is supplied with the cars history file, along with every Z owners club magazine from 1990 to the early 2000’s!

Edward Kemp, who purchased the car new in 1978, died in 2010. The was passed onto his daughter, who signed the car over to her husband and kept the car in the family until 2017 and was mostly unused in that time. In 2018 the family decided to part with the family heirloom after being in their ownership for almost 40 years.

The term ‘time warp’ is over used greatly as of recent. But this 260Z, which still, after all these years manages to exhibit itself in an overall untouched condition with the smallest amount of patina really deserves the time warp cliche bade and should wear it proud.

For more information please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Looking for a new home.
